Mission or Goal of Unit: VCU's Department of Pediatrics is committed to training and developing the next generation of dedicated pediatricians, caring for each child as if they were our own and advancing the specialty and its myriad subspecialties through innovative research. Our central hub is at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU in downtown Richmond, with satellite locations and community clinics all throughout Central Virginia. Chief Purpose of this position: The VCU Department of Pediatrics is seeking applicants for a general pediatric physician scientist. Candidates will need to demonstrate a track record of securing extramural funding in a related scientific area and will be expected to be actively involved in grant submissions, and manuscript publication. The scientist will collaborate with the other members of the division, under the direction of the Chief and Director of Research for the Division.

Position Responsibilities:
  • RESEARCH: Faculty member will be expected to develop research initiatives related to their education, training and experience and, with the assistance of mentorship, develop the ability to secure revenue through externally funded, competitive grants and contracts. Eventual progression toward research mentor to other members of the division and the department of pediatrics.
  • TEACHING: Faculty member will have teaching responsibilities in the area of their research interest within the Medical School and other avenues for expansion of their portfolio. Will be expected to actively participate in teaching, research and education of faculty, fellows and trainees.
  • CLINICAL: Faculty member will be responsible for direct patient care, potentially in inpatient or outpatient areas based on their education, training and experience.
  • SERVICE: Faculty member will have additional responsibilities of being a good citizen and serve on Departmental or School of Medicine level committees when appropriate, as well as professional service through journal reviews, conference presentations, manuscript preparation, IRB reviews for faculty and fellows and serving on the Clinical Competency Committee for fellows.

Required Qualifications:
  • MD or DO degree.
  • Completed a General Pediatric Residency.
  • Track record of seeing their research proposals through to completion.
  • An established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as well as potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department(s).
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Completion of a pediatric fellowship.
  • Success in generating revenue (grants/contracts).
  • Masters in Public health (MPH).
