The University of Virginia School of Medicine Department of Medical Education seeks a Lab Manager and Diener to oversee the Gross Anatomy Lab. This position will work directly with human anatomical donors (cadavers).

The Gross Anatomy Lab Manager and Diener is responsible for managing a small team of staff and ensuring that labs are adequately staffed, required supplies and training materials are available, and that fiscal processes (e.g., purchasing, account certifications, etc.) are completed accurately and on time.

The ideal candidate should have strong communication skills, be highly organized, attentive to detail, self-motivated, able to work independently, capable of motivating and rewarding others, and will demonstrate a willingness and ability to learn.

Job Responsibilities Include:
  • Manage the procurement and maintenance of human anatomical donors (cadavers), lab equipment, classroom supplies, and anatomical models.
  • Requires meticulous record keeping for associated processes (including ordering/receiving cadavers, preparing cadavers for pickup by funeral home, contacting next of kin, shipping of cremains back to next of kin, and communication with VSAP).
  • Responsible for the operation, routine maintenance, repair, monitoring, and cleaning of all equipment, computers, and supplies, to ensure the smooth operation of the Gross Anatomy program.
  • Ensure computers and anatomical software (VH Dissector and Complete Anatomy) are functioning properly.
  • Work with Director to organize, setup, and clean-up teaching sessions and labs in the Gross Anatomy Lab (includes assisting during scheduled dissection labs, practical exam setup, and maintaining the specimen storage room to ensure cleanliness and safety).
  • Ensure the appropriate teaching materials are present during Medical Education instruction.
  • Ensure lab users follow the UVA SOM Gross Anatomy Laboratory Policies and Rules.
  • Complete budgetary processes for Anatomy Cost Center (e.g., expense reports, purchase orders, monthly account certifications, provide annual budget recommendations based on trends, explain budget variances, etc.).
  • Liaison with internal (e.g., MedEd Tech, Environmental Health and Safety, Facilities Management, Office of Curriculum, SOM, etc.) and external (e.g., Virginia State Anatomical Program) stakeholders, conducting daily business operations on behalf of supported programs.
  • Frequent contact with students, faculty, and staff to provide information, consultation, or direction concerning laboratory operations.
  • Frequent contact with regulatory boards and/or governmental entities regarding standards, quality assurance, and lab procedures.
  • Plan, lead, manage, and evaluate the work of lab staff (develop goals, objectives, and timetables; ensure work is done accurately and on time, following established lab protocols).
  • May teach and/or serve as a technical expert.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master's degree. Bachelor's degree accepted with additional experience.

Experience: Master's degree: F our years of experience in lab technical and supervisory role. Bachelor's Degree: Six years of experience in lab technical and/or supervisory role.

Licensure: Medical Laboratory Technician certification preferred. Certain areas may require certification to be obtained through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Degree in mortuary science or Anatomy, graduate of an LPN program, or graduate of an equivalent military training program
  • At least 3 years working with and caring for cadavers.
  • At least 3 years of experience managing a lab, preferably in Anatomy.
  • Experience preparing and creating digital content for student instruction, preferably in Anatomy, Pathology, or Physiology.
  • Experience working at an academic healthcare institution.
  • Experience supporting courses or workshops.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.

Anticipated hiring range: $70,000 - $77,000, commensurate with education and experience. This fully on-site position is exempt level, full-time, and benefitted. For more information on the benefits at UVA, visit https://hr.virginia.edu/benefits .
