Description for Candidates:

  • Perform materials sampling and testing on projects and in the laboratory. Perform inspections at plants and on projects. Compile and maintain test results and report findings. Maintain and operate testing equipment. Provide technical support to assigned engineering program area.

    How you will contribute:
  • Communication: Communicate with VDOT staff as well as external contacts and consultants. Proactively resolve issues at the lowest level. Project a positive VDOT image. Keep supervisor advised of important development and field observations.

  • Engineering Technology: Apply principles and practices of engineering technology to assigned program areas. Interpret policies and procedures and apply in daily work assignments.
  • Equipment Maintenance : Perform routine maintenance and repairs on testing equipment. Follow appropriate guidelines for equipment storage, use, and transport.
  • Field Monitoring and Inspection : Monitor and document materials placement techniques, testing, and equipment at project site. Assist field staff on proper testing procedures and preparation of samples for materials testing. Collect samples from project site. Compute and document test results. Assist with monitoring large concrete pours or asphalt paving that may require working at irregular hours. 
  • Laboratory testing : Conduct laboratory tests on material samples collected from project sites. Compute and document test results. 
  • Plant Monitoring and inspection : Inspect materials production and collect samples at plant. Assist with plant laboratory inspections. Perform statistical sampling in accordance with VDOT quality assurance program. Input data and assist with data analysis and preparation of reports for distribution.
  • Project Documentation: Prepare and maintain daily documentation of project activities. Ensure documentation is submitted and is completed. Avoid project delays and solve project related matters.

  • Recordkeeping : Compile and maintain automated and written reports and project records for materials sampling and testing conducted in production plants, on project sites, and in the laboratory.

  • Minimum Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of state and federal guidelines and regulations as related to transportation.
  • Materials certifications vary by position.  Ability to obtain combination of certifications that apply to specific materials position within 12 months of employment. 
  • Valid driver's license.

  • Additional Considerations:
  • A combination of training, experience, or education in Engineering, Construction, or related field desired. 
  • Knowledge in highway materials testing, inspection, or construction. 
  • Materials testing certifications.
