The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Human Resources, has an exciting career opportunity for an entry level human resources position in a high-volume, fast-paced HR office for an agency of 600+ salaried employees. The successful candidate will have demonstrated hands-on work experience in a position(s) responsible for administrative support and data analytics. Duties include, but are not limited to, administrative and technical support for the office, data entry, data analysis, special projects, records management (paper and electronic), purchasing, travel arrangements, accounting forms (vouchers, requisitions, etc.), basic tasks in other functional areas of human resources, etc. This position is also responsible for absence management reporting and auditing and serving as a liaison to payroll. Once onboarded, this position may be eligible for telework opportunities; availability, hours, and duration of telework shall be approved as outlined in the Commonwealth’s telework policy. Currently, VDACS’ Human Resources Office will consider one telework day per week once the selected candidate is fully onboarded and trained. This position may be required to provide office coverage during core business hours (up to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday).

Minimum Qualifications

Basic working knowledge of human resources and office administration, procedures and guidelines typically associated with roles in a human resources office. Superior customer service skills. The ability to independently manage diverse responsibilities and prioritize work assignments to effectively meet tight deadlines and enhance operating efficiency of the office is essential. Ability to communicate in a courteous, professional, and tactful manner both orally and in writing with a diverse population in all situations and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of the organization. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail are a must. Ability to work as a member of a team; take direction; apply and interpret personnel policies and guidelines; manage administrative details; effectively conduct research; work with sensitive information and discreetly manage delicate situations with tact, respect and courtesy are required. Proficiency with a variety of software application systems, particularly MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint) and web-based systems such as e-learning, recruitment management, etc. H.S. Diploma or equivalent required.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of human resources principles, office administration, data analytics, or related field. Proven experience in human resources setting, report generation, data analysis, and administrative support, preferably in state government. Basic working knowledge of state software systems such as Cardinal/PeopleSoft, PageUp, VRS Navigator, etc.
