The Chesterfield-Colonial Heights Department of Social Services is hiring a Human Services Assistant for our Customer Relations team to help individuals and families in Chesterfield County and Colonial Heights by ensuring that they can access our services and have a positive experience. Whether they’re handling customer inquiries, providing information and support, or acting as a liaison to our other teams, the Human Services Assistant is truly the front-line of our department. 

What You Do and How You Do It:

The Human Services Assistant works collaboratively with all members of the Department of Social Services. This team acts as a vital bridge between the agency and the individuals it services. Your primary function would revolve around ensuring positive client experiences by addressing inquiries, resolving complaints, and providing comprehensive support. This involves guiding individuals through complex service systems, explaining eligibility criteria, and offering empathetic assistance during challenging times. In a dynamic, high-volume setting, this role delivers comprehensive customer service by directly engaging with clients both in person and over the phone. As a Human Services Assistant, your responsibilities encompass welcoming and guiding individuals, responding to inquiries, and managing incoming calls, including taking messages and directing them appropriately. A key aspect involves assisting in the collection and verification of client information, so our Benefits team can determine eligibility for various assistance programs. You will also ensure clear communication of available resources and facilitating referrals to relevant agencies. The position also entails meticulous record-keeping, correspondence composition, and providing administrative support to Benefit Workers. Additional duties include clear communication with both internal and external stakeholders, document management through scanning, faxing, and filing, and accurate data entry, which may involve handling confidential and sensitive information. You will need to be able to adapt to evolving needs, performing other tasks as assigned.

Here's What You Need:

  • High school diploma supplemented with post-secondary coursework in subjects such as social work, human services, gerontology, or one of the social or behavioral sciences, business or related field.

  • Relevant work experience in public administrative support work OR any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

We’re Looking for Ideal Candidates Who Have:

  • Two years of experience in office support and administration practices and procedures, clerical, and/or direct customer service (three years preferred).

  • Experience within social services/human services, business, or a related field.

  • Relevant work experience in local government or public administration support work preferred.

  • Excellent organizational skills with strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong customer service skills; professional and interpersonal skills necessary for teamwork.

  • Computer experience with word processing, electronic records, and basic spreadsheets.

  • Experience in electronic database applications and information systems preferred.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Good time management with the ability to work accurately and timely under pressure.

  • Ability to compile and review data from multiple systems.

  • Spanish bilingual preferred.

     

Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, record must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months. Out of state driving records must be obtained by applicant and presented at time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview date.  Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.

A Chesterfield County application is also required and must be submitted online by the deadline.

This position is part of an Emergency Shelter Team during times of natural disaster, reporting to shelter duty as required.
