Compliance Analysts execute the operational activities of a compliance program such as Immigration, Risk Management, Office of Equal Opportunity, Institutional Review Board, Athletics, and Office of Sponsored Programs. They are knowledgeable about the complex legal and regulatory issues potentially impacting University operations, and follow established protocol when dealing with compliance procedures, such as compliance reporting and document review. Analysts exercise some degree of independence and autonomy, but will seek help before handling more complex functions.
The IHSSC delivers and maintains critical program components of the institution-wide travel preparedness and response strategy to promote and protect the wellbeing of the University and its students, faculty, and staff who travel internationally for university-related purposes . Within the IHSS Team, their focus is on daily, monthly, and annual routines for travel registration, traveler preparation, site and risk assessment, and intelligence monitoring and analysis . The IHSSC provides a frontline face for international health, safety, and security policies and protocols to students and program leaders and shares24/7 emergency response and incident management duties . The IHSSC participates in the development of policies and protocols, may serve as a subject-matter expert for specific topics or regions, and works collaboratively with colleagues, travelers, and partners (internal and external) to facilitate worldwide travel awareness and readiness . The IHSSC is part of the IHSS Team and closely coordinates with and reports to the IHSS Manager. The position is hybrid in Charlottesville and rotates on call 24/7 for the ISO response to critical incidents.
Under director of the International Health, Safety, and Security Manager (IHSSM) supports execution of standards and procedures for risk assessment and intelligence analysis in IHSS, working collaboratively within ISO and with other university offices with relevant responsibilities.
On assigned projects, develops goals and requirements in partnership with colleagues and stakeholders, conducts research, fosters consensus, designs and executes project plans in accordance with agreed upon timelines, and leads implementation and outreach.
Contributes to the Crisis Management Plan for Education Abroad (CMP EA).
Provides 24/7 intelligence and operations support during incidents, coordinating closely with the IHSS Manager, Crisis Management Team, Insurance, and the Global Assistance Provider. Under direction from the IHSSM may manage individual incidents, ensuring timely communication and decision-making in partnership with supervisor, leadership, and relevant stakeholders . May conduct welfare checks to account for travelers during critical events.
With the IHSS Manager, reviews high-risk travel requests and briefs travelers on risks and mitigation recommendations. Provides analyses and assesses high-risk locations, including approval/disapproval recommendations.
Participates in IHSS review and assessment of new programs and sites abroad. Researches site- and activity-specific risks and mitigations. Applies expertise to identify and address specific safety issues, consulting with location-specific experts and external resources as necessary.
Manages and maintains daily, monthly, and annual routines for the institution-wide travel registry and related systems for traveler messaging and emergency response. Provides general customer service, ensuring prompt attention to questions from students, faculty, and staff. Determines trip-specific or site-specific recommendations (e.g., transport, fire safety, or security protocols) on request.
Supports other offices on cross-functional requirements as needed, including Clery Act reporting, research security, and Title IX/VAWA.
With IHSS manager, develops and may lead online and in-person training and briefings for travelers and program leaders.
On an agreed upon schedule, rotates on call duties for the ISO 24/7 response line with the IHSS team.
Participates in external professional networks, including the US Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC), Pulse International, and other organizations.
Aid in executing compliance program components, including protocol and consent form review, record keeping, reporting, and evaluation.
Perform preliminary review of protocols and identify potential concerns, reporting any to supervisor.
Update database, maintain files, and handle database issues as needed.
Aid in preparing reports, presentations, and strategic materials for key review committees.
May perform all duties of a Compliance Coordinator, as needed.
In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
M inimum Requirements
B achelor's degree. 4 years of relevant experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
At least two years of relevant experience.
Strong analytic and communication skills, including listening skills. Demonstrated ability to perform tasks with accuracy and efficiency and an ability to work independently.
Patience, flexibility, humility, and comfort with ambiguity. Ability to remain calm in crisis situations, exercise sound judgment, and handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
Demonstrated ability to form trusting relationships, to communicate effectively and persuasively with all kinds of people, and to communicate a service-oriented and collaborative approach.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's or Masters in field with international, comparative, or global focus.
2-5 years of experience working with students, faculty, or similarly entrepreneurial travelers.
Experience in Education Abroad, International Student Support, or Student Affairs and experience with international risk assessment, mitigation, and/or crisis response a plus.
Experience living and working in other languages, cultures, or countries.
Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
This positio n is Hybrid loc ate d in Charlottesville, VA . Anticipated Hiring Range: $54,000 - $57,000 commensurate with education and experience.
