Position Summary:

The Krishnan Lab in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology at Virginia Commonwealth University (www.krishnan-lab.com) is seeking a highly motivated and capable Research Technician to join our growing team. We are a new lab utilizing cutting-edge techniques to study the neurobiological mechanisms of memory. We train mice to navigate virtual environments while recording activity from their brains using a two-photon microscope, which allows us to see individual brain cells in action during learning and decision-making. Our interdisciplinary approach combines biology, engineering, and computation with a strong emphasis on hands-on work.

This position offers a unique opportunity to help establish and shape a new lab. We are looking for someone who is organized, detail-oriented, and enjoys troubleshooting and problem-solving. The technician will assist with building lab infrastructure, managing day-to-day logistics, maintaining equipment, and ordering supplies. In addition to general lab support, the technician will contribute to behavioral neuroscience projects, including training animals and assisting with surgical procedures. While prior experience with rodent research is preferred, it is not required. The successful candidate will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Seetha Krishnan, and contribute to the lab’s overall research mission by providing both technical and organizational support.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone interested in gaining hands-on experience in a collaborative and intellectually engaging research environment with strong mentorship. A minimum one-year commitment is required, with a strong preference for a two-year term. Applicants from diverse academic backgrounds-neuroscience, biology, psychology, engineering, computer science, or related fields-are encouraged to apply.

Core Responsibilities:

General laboratory maintenance (50%):
The lab technician will be responsible for overall laboratory maintenance, including ordering supplies, maintaining equipment, communicating with vendors, managing inventory, and ensuring the lab remains clean, organized, and well-stocked. In the early stages, the technician will help set up the lab by assisting with ordering, assembling, and testing new equipment. They will also assist with compliance related to biosafety, chemical safety, and animal care protocols. Responsibilities also include performing routine animal health checks and supporting the management of the mouse colony.

Experimental work (50%):
The technician will help with the development and advancement of mouse behavioral assays in the lab. They will also assist with preparing tissue samples and performing histological procedures, such as sectioning and immunohistochemistry. They will assist with surgical procedures, including preparation, setup, and post-operative monitoring. Prior experience with handling and preparing mice for in vivo experimental procedures is preferred but not necessary.
