Lab Tech/Specialist Varying Levels - Neuroscience

The Ross Lab in the Department of Neuroscience, the Center of Brain Immunology and Glia (BIG), and the University of Virginia Cancer Center is seeking to hire a motivated and detail-oriented Lab Tech/Specialist to perform and assist with animal colony management, data analysis, and in vivo and in vitro experiments. The Ross lab is investigating tumor associated macrophages and microglia in high-grade glioma. A combination of immune competent mouse models and human patient samples are utilized to develop immunologic insights into disease pathogenesis and therapeutic resistance. A strong emphasis on clinical translation is held in these studies.

The applicant will be responsible for managing the lab’s animal colony, genotyping, contributing to data analysis, performing molecular studies, and helping to train graduate students. Routine methods used in the lab are flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, and primary cell cultures among others. The applicant must be able and willing to work with mice and human tissue samples. The applicant must also be willing to learn new techniques and analytical skills as required. The ideal candidate would be a highly motivated self-starter who has experience with performing immunological studies and experiments as well as working with mice. The candidate will work closely with the principal investigator on experimental methodology, data analysis, manuscript writing, and professional development. Also included in tasks would be keeping track of lab inventory and lab biosafety protocols.

The successful candidate should also possess excellent written and oral communication skills and be motivated to learn new laboratory techniques and skills. Applicants should also possess strong problem-solving skills and be able to work independently and as part of a team.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: Associate's degree

Experience: At least 2 years of lab experience which may include student experience. Bachelor's degree in related science will be considered in lieu of experience.

Licensure: None.

Physical Demands

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
