Position Summary/Overview:

The Laboratory Safety Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the university remains in compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations related to the use of hazardous chemicals in research. Core responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Conducting laboratory safety inspections and assessments in both VCU and VCU Health System facilities to identify and mitigate safety risks.
  • Enforcing the Occupational Health and Safety policy through a structured 30-60-90 day escalation process to ensure timely resolution of safety concerns.
  • Promoting a positive safety culture by learning about VCU’s research programs and using a risk-based approach to safety evaluations.
  • Collaborating with lab personnel to develop and agree upon practical, acceptable mitigation strategies for identified hazards.
  • Supporting department leadership in maintaining and delivering a comprehensive safety training program, including all modules relevant to laboratory safety.
  • Assisting team members with a wide range of EHS functions as needed, such as industrial hygiene surveys, respirator fit testing, hazardous waste management, indoor environmental quality investigations, lab closeout procedures, and incident response (including on-call duties).
  • Delivering training on topics such as chemical hygiene, lab safety, spill response, and hazardous waste management.
  • Assisting laboratories with the creating and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for high-risk chemicals and processes, ensuring alignment with the university’s Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP).
  • Serving as a knowledgeable resource for faculty, staff, and students regarding lab safety practices.
  • Maintaining accurate records, inspection reports, and training data using shared drives, spreadsheets, and the EHS-SRM management system (e.g., SciShield).
  • Pursuing ongoing professional development in the field of Environmental Health and Safety, with an emphasis on laboratory safety.
