Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health Profession's (DHP) mission is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice, and providing information to health care practitioners and the public.

This position serves as the Licensing Specialist for the Board of Veterinary Medicine by assisting and supporting the Executive Director (ED) and Deputy Executive Director (DED) in the veterinary establishment registration and inspection program and supporting the units disciplinary and compliance caseload by receiving and processing veterinary establishment registration applications as well as new, routine, and compliance inspections, evaluating inspection documents for completeness and applying relevant laws and regulations for the adjudication of inspection deficiencies, docketing compliance inspections as necessary pursuant to Board orders, and preparing and tracking disciplinary and compliance case documents. The Licensing Specialist will also provide licensure support for the Boards of Veterinary Medicine, Optometry, and Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of the laws, regulations and procedures associated with the regulation of professional occupations and with adjudication of disciplinary cases, including knowledge of the Administrative Process Act and Freedom of Information Act.
• Demonstrated ability to independently organize, track and prioritize workflow in a fast-paced, customer service-oriented environment.
• Demonstrated ability to read, understand, and apply laws and regulations.
• Effective analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze medical and pharmaceutical drug records, legal documents, and technical material to facilitate case decisions.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with agency personnel, board members and/or executive level staff, licensees, and the public, including the ability to prepare official case documents and supplemental case reports.
• Knowledge of general office processes and procedures.
• Considerable experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
• Knowledge of data management and state and agency policies regarding records retention.
