As a Maintenance Supervisor, you will use our foundational drivers to play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect communities and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia.

As a Maintenance Supervisor, you will
* Supervise crews performing daily maintenance operations.
* Assess, plan, and schedule roadway maintenance, including estimating materials, labor, and costs. Order supplies, monitor expenditures, and oversee work.
* Evaluate staff, develop individualized training, and give feedback for continued growth.
* Lead safety meetings, and train staff on safety, ensuring work zones and traffic controls align with standards. Safety is our number one focus; you are encouraged to identify workplace safety hazards and make recommendations for improvements.
* Respond to customer inquiries and identify solutions.
* Maintain work accomplishment records.
* Coordinate, direct, and respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris. Provide traffic control and perform operations to reopen the road. Supervise severe weather response for snow and ice, and other types of hazardous weather conditions. Severe weather shifts are typically 12 hours and may include working weekends, holidays, and after-hours. This position is required to work during emergencies.
* Serve as working supervisor by operating equipment, and performing heavy manual labor as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

*Considerable knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction practices and procedures.
*Skilled in the use of computers and software applications.
*Skilled in operating and maintaining light to heavy-duty trucks and equipment.
*Ability to direct, evaluate, and train others.
*Knowledge of inventory practices and procedures.
*Valid driver's license required at hire. Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.

Additional Considerations

*DCR Erosion and Sediment Control certification.
*Experience planning schedules and assigning manpower.
*Ability to gather data, conduct research, and create reports.
*Experience overseeing emergency operations activities including snow removal, storm damage, and accident clean-up.

Special Instructions

Fingerprint-based background checks, references, work history, and DMV records will be verified before employment. Selected applicants holding a valid CDL must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen, otherwise, applicants will be required to complete a pre-employment physical. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.

All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles before receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
