Job Duties

The Chickahominy Health District is seeking a wage Nutritionist Associate. By supporting the program up to 29 hours weekly, the Nutrition Associate provides administrative support to the WIC program and provides low-risk nutrition counseling and breastfeeding support to pregnant and postpartum Women, Infants, & Children under the age of 5 years.

The Nutritionist Associate independently determines nutrition eligibility of applicants/clients within program guidelines and independently prescribes appropriate food packages. Assesses nutritional status/eligibility for program services by: Nutrition Assessment using VENA technique process/food frequency history, assessing growth patterns, weight patterns, biochemical values and medical history. Independently sets dietary goals based on the assessment. Provides patient counseling specific to the individual’s nutritional needs. Makes referrals for high-risk counseling with Nutritionist when appropriate. This position will also complete administrative tasks such as determining WIC program eligibility and answering phone calls, when not performing nutrition counseling.

The Chickahominy Health District local health departments covering Charles City, Goochland, Hanover, and New Kent counties of the Commonwealth, is part of the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) that serves the citizens of these localities preventing illness, promoting healthy lifestyles, and protecting the environment. This position will be based in Hanover County. Some travel will be required within the district with personal vehicle mileage reimbursement or agency vehicle when available.

NOTE: Wage positions do no offer benefits such as leave, health benefits, retirement and the annual hours are limited to 1,500.

This is a RESTRICTED POSITION which is solely funded by the Federal WIC Grant. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually. Annual funding cycle is Oct. 1st to Sept. 30th of the following year. Employment is contingent on the continued availability of grant funds.

Minimum Qualifications

• Basic knowledge of nutrition and nutritional standards
• Ability to conduct interviews and collect information
• Ability to interpret, document, calculate, and compile routine data
• Experience providing patient education and/or communicating information to individuals
• Good communication skills, verbally and in writing, to interact with a variety of patients, peers, and supervisors
• Ability to work effectively individually and as a team member
• Experience multi-tasking and prioritizing workloads
• Skills using computer systems

Additional Considerations

•Training, job experience, or coursework in Nutrition, Dietetics, food services, or a related area preferred
• Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
• Experience working in a health care setting.
• Experience working for the WIC program or as a WIC participant.
• WIC Competent Professional Authority (CPA) or Competent Paraprofessional Authority (CPPA) status.
