Position Description:

The Dean's Office of the College of Engineering invites qualified candidates to apply for the Operations Manager position. Since its inception in 1996, the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering has brought innovative, real-world engineering education to Central Virginia. Comprised of five different departments plus the Dean’s office, the College of Engineering enrolls more than 2,000 undergraduate and 450 graduate students in several degree programs supported by approximately 600 full-time, part-time, and student employees. The Operations Manager will be responsible for multiple buildings and garages, not limited to, West Hall, East Hall, Engineering Research Building, Institute for Engineering and Medicine, BioTech 8, and multiple garages, for day-to-day activities of the buildings including safety, security, receiving, and maintenance. The Operations Manager will also take care of faculty needs for daily operation, both in teaching and research.
Specifically, duties include:
  • Responsible day-to-day activities of the College of Engineering and providing individual support to the Associate Dean for Research
  • Work with the AD for Research regarding managing the planning and usage of all College of Engineering space.
  • Recommend assignments and work with College leadership regarding space for faculty, staff, labs, teaching spaces, conference rooms and collaboration areas.
  • Ensure projects are compliant with VCU standards and expectations.
  • Coordinate meetings and track a high volume of activities.
  • Monitor and provide status reporting on space (offices and labs) renovations to include schedules, resources, and equipment by serving as the liaison between the College of Engineering and external units to identify and define project requirements, scope, and objectives.
  • Overseeing the coordination of fixed asset inventory, key and building swipe access requests, processing and receiving daily packages and distributions for the College, supervising students, and assisting with event logistics as requested.
  • Make routine decisions independently and refer upper-level issues to the Associate Dean when needed.
  • Responsible for ensuring safety requirements are followed within the labs and providing quality service to internal and external customers in a timely, professional manner.
  • Additionally, this position is responsible to prepare, follow, and adhere to the operations budget and different renovation accounts.
  • Manage and provide supervision to the College of Engineering Operations Team by reviewing goals, managing progress, promoting participation in professional development opportunities, providing open communication, coaching and mentoring, and allowing the Operations staff to manage their areas to promote a well-rounded environment.
  • Work with staff members on events regarding facility needs
