VDOT's Lynchburg District Appomattox Area Headquarters is looking for a part time (wage) Operator Maintenance to drive improve and maintain infrastructure for the Virginia Department of Transportation! As the successful candidate, you will perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and heavy manual labor while conducting roadway maintenance activities. This position is considered essential.
Core Responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Work as part of a team clearing drainage, removing debris, cutting brush, and roadway maintenance. • Operate equipment such as, but not limited to, dump trucks, backhoes, graders, tar distributers, rollers, loaders, mowing tractors, etc. • Use hand and power tools and perform manual labor tasks. • Respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents and debris, to provide traffic control and perform activities to reopen the road. Emergency response may require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. • Set up work zones and perform traffic control, focusing on proper work site protection.
Minimum Qualifications
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools. • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair. • Ability to perform heavy manual labor. • Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures. • Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions. • Possession of CDL and DOT medical card and ability to maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment. • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. • Safety shoes required.
Additional Considerations
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Construction, or related field desired. • Skilled in roadway maintenance and construction. • Ability to perform preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs. • Skilled in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms, and accident clean-up.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training.
