Job Duties

Properly install and maintain longitudinal pavement markings, pavement messages and other traffic control devices. Perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance. Perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee. Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair. Knowledge and application of work zone safety, traffic controls and flagging operations to include the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Ability to work on a team to complete work assignments. Working knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and techniques. Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

• Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding traffic control devices.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of specialty equipment and complex machinery used in pavement marking and messaging.
• Experience and ability performing heavy manual labor.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions, read and interpret work plans and specifications, and complete accurate work documentation.
• Skill in the use and maintenance of hand and power tools, as well as light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
• Safety shoes required.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret plans and sketches.
• Working knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and techniques.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in pavement marking and messaging operations.
• Experience in emergency operations to include snow and ice removal, storms and debris
clean-up.
• Experience in the installation and maintenance of various types of traffic control devices.
• Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements.

• Commercial Driver' License (CDL)
• Basic Tree Cutting & Chainsaw Operator
• Basic Work Zone Traffic Control Safety Training
• CPR with AED, Standard First Aid, and Blood Borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined Course
• Flagger

Safety shoes and other personal protective equipment (PPE) required in performance of job duties.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.

Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

Valid Driver’s License and ability to travel independently among assigned work locations is required.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
