    Job Description:

Brightpoint Community College is a two-year public institution of higher education and is the third largest of Virginia’s 23 community colleges. The college is located within the Greater Richmond metropolitan area. It serves students and the community at its two campuses, in Chester and Midlothian; online; and in locations throughout its service area. Brightpoint Community College’s mission is to provide quality educational opportunities that inspire student success and community vitality. It envisions a success story for every student.

Brightpoint Community College invites applications for two part-time High School Career and College Navigator (High School Navigator) positions. We currently have openings in the following areas: one position serving Matoaca and Petersburg High Schools, working 25 to 29 hours per week, and another position serving Charles City, Surry, and Sussex Central High Schools, working approximately 20 hours per week. High School Navigators support students in our service-area high schools by helping them explore career pathways and plan for college. These roles are primarily based in high schools during the regular school day, with some evening and weekend hours required.
Each High School Navigator is assigned to multiple schools and works onsite at those locations. The Matoaca and Petersburg position requires four days per week, typically two days at each school. The Charles City, Surry, and Sussex Central position requires three days per week, typically one day per school. High School Navigators meet with students individually and in small groups to assess career interests using tools like O*Net and EMSI Career Coach. They assist with the college application process, including completing the FAFSA and other steps related to college and career readiness. High School Navigators also deliver presentations in classrooms and participate in school events.
For students planning to attend Brightpoint, the High School Navigator serves as their New Student Navigator, supporting them through the admissions and financial aid process, advising on college majors, and assisting with first-semester course registration. This support continues into the summer. High School Navigators are also expected to attend Brightpoint Open Houses and New Student Orientations held in the evenings and during the summer. Additional responsibilities may include organizing school-based events, field trips, workshops, coordinating college-related activities, and representing Brightpoint Community College at community and school functions.

    Minimum Qualifications:

Required: Strong interpersonal, communication, time management, and organizational skills. Ability to use technology effectively to support departmental goals. Must be able to work on-site at assigned high schools within Brightpoint’s service region, at both Brightpoint campuses, and remotely from home as needed. The position requires availability during regular high school hours to ensure support is provided when students are present. Occasional travel within the college’s service area may be required. Must be available to work a flexible schedule that includes some evenings and weekends. Must be comfortable working with high school students, parents, teachers, counselors, and school administrators. Successful completion of a criminal background check is required
    Additional Considerations:

Knowledge of database management and recruiting/counseling best practices. Prior experience with secondary school counseling, career planning, or higher education counseling/recruiting is preferred.
