Job Duties

Virginia Beach is interested in a Public Health nurse to provide health services to the following essential programs: TB and Newcomer Health, Immunization, STI, as well as additional community-based initiatives. The Public Health Nurse will participate in emergency preparedness, field operations, epidemiology investigations as they relate to communicable disease, and population health education. Conduct home visits, participate in mobile events and partner with organizations throughout the city on disease prevention and screening. Assists/participates with communicable disease epidemiological investigations, provides case management, and assures appropriate patient intervention and follow-up with abnormal laboratory results and other conditions. The PHN must excel as a team player and be able to work independently.

The Ideal candidate will independently provide:
• Professional nursing care to patients in clinics, homes and schools and other community or congregate care settings.
• Perform nursing assessments, may perform lab tests, take measurements, develop and implement care plans, including the
administration of medication and case management.
• Participate in public health emergencies and community health assessments. Actions performed at this level require licensure as a RN by state code.
• May supervise support staff.

Minimum Qualifications

• Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish
priorities
• Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
• Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
• Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
• May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
• Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR

Additional Considerations

• Additional study in health promotion/or public health is preferred
• BSN preferred
• Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion
