Pharmacy Technician - Specialty Pharmacy Operations

Prepares and delivers medications to patients and/or nursing units under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist/licensed independent practitioner. Online classroom training through Pharmacy Technician University. (Must pass Reading Comprehension and Math Pre-enrollment Assessments in three attempts or less. A minimum score of 70% is required for each assessment prior to acceptance into the program). Experiential training in our state-of-the-art pharmacy, Preparation for passing the national certification exam. Candidates accepting a position will continue in their role as a pharmacy technician after completing the program and achieving their Virginia Registration. Candidates must complete Pharmacy Technician University and achieve registration within 2 years of employment.

The successful incumbent for this position would likely work the evening shift, between 12pm and 8:30pm, and would rotate working weekends. Final schedule determinations are made by the manager and are subject to change.

About the Department
Located at 1725 Discovery Dr., Suite 200, Charlottesville, VA 22911, UVA Specialty Pharmacy supports patients with complex and chronic conditions including cancer, HIV, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, and transplant-related therapies.

Our pharmacy technicians work alongside clinical pharmacists to:
  • Coordinate prior authorizations and insurance approvals
  • Secure financial assistance and copay support
  • Manage refill reminders and patient outreach
  • Facilitate free home delivery

Minimum Qualifications -
  • Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent.
  • Experience: No experience required.
  • Licensure/Certifications: Registration as a Pharmacy Technician with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy within 2 years of hire required. Must register as a Pharmacy Technician Trainee upon hire with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy. Persons enrolled in a pharmacy technician training program must obtain a pharmacy technician trainee registration if they will be performing the duties of a pharmacy technician.


Preferred Qualifications -
  • Education: High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • Experience: 6 months minimum relevant experience
  • Licensure/Certifications: Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration required. CPhT credential through National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required. For team members hired prior to February 1, 2020, certification as CPhT through NHA or PTCB is required by January 31, 2022.


Physical Demands - Job requires standing for prolonged periods. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull less than 20lbs.

Onboarding Requirements

Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen.

Position Compensation Range: $20.68 - $32.05 Hourly
