The Cancer Center at the University of Virginia seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar to work in the laboratory of Thomas Loughran Jr., MD (https://www.loughranlab.com/). The incumbent joins an interactive group of motivated scientists to study the pathogenesis and treatment of hematologic malignancies with a focus on large granular lymphocyte (LGL) leukemia and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Candidate will join a highly collaborative research team to investigate the pathogenic mechanisms in LGL leukemia including somatic mutations; epigenetic, biochemical and signaling alterations; and immunologic events such as antigenic drivers of cytotoxic T-cell responses. Experience with sensitive molecular assays to detect somatic variants in malignant samples and correlation of mutation profiling to patient clinical features are essential for this position.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must have PhD (or equivalent) degree in hand by the start date. Preferred experience in Molecular Medicine, Molecular Biology, Pathology, Cell Biology, or related.

Research experience to include each of the following: cell biology, molecular biology, cell and cytokine/chemokine signaling, T-cell and NK cell biology, culture and genetic manipulation of primary human material and cell lines, as well as pre-clinical in vitro and in vivo experimental therapeutic development is desired.

Position will provide instruction, training and mentoring to undergraduate and graduate students and technicians, therefore a minimum of one-year experience in a teaching capacity (including teaching assistant or tutor) required. Experience acquired as an undergraduate or graduate student is acceptable.

Position will require administrative and managerial duties, including but not limited to, managing and guiding research projects in the lab and coordinating collaborative research projects with investigators within UVA and at other institutions.

Position will also contribute to the writing of manuscripts and grant applications, therefore demonstrated experience and success in these areas is required. Successful candidates must have effective oral and written communication skills as evidenced by a solid track record of scientific manuscripts and poster presentations.

Postdoctoral employment is normally limited to an individual who has been awarded a doctoral degree within the previous five years. This is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal ( for an additional two, one-year increments) contingent upon satisfactory performance and the availability of funding. Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
