The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for a Principal Scientist position to lead multidisciplinary computational projects on hypersonic flows in the role of software architect. The candidate will assume the role of chief software architect for creating and managing complex software systems for the the CFD and Propulsion Laboratory, a participating lab in UVA’s Hypersonics Research Complex led by Dr. Christopher Goyne. The Complex supports our core strengths in air-breathing propulsion and materials for hypersonic applications and is serving as a catalyst to expand our systems engineering and turbomachinery research for hypersonic applications.

As a software architect, the candidate must independently develop and implement plans for integrating software libraries performing I/O, adaptive mesh-refinement, data assimilation, and AI/ML in a manner that supports the participation of research scientists, postdocs, and graduate students. The candidate is expected to contribute towards the development of new research directions and form responses to funding opportunity announcements. The candidate must provide leadership in their tasks and responsibilities and be able to perform them with minimal oversight. The candidate may be expected to supervise other scientists and support and mentor PhD students in aspects of software development and usage.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: The candidate must have a PhD in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, or another related field. 10+ years of research experience in computational engineering is preferred. The candidate must be able to demonstrate a deep knowledge of supercomputing software development for massively-parallel computer architectures, and expertise in integration of scalable, distributed software systems designed for cutting-edge aerospace applications. Additional requirements include proficiency with C++ and Fortran and parallel programming models of MPI, OpenSHMEM, and CUDA; experience developing complex CFD software as part of a multidisciplinary team; and efficacy at communicating and planning with computer-facility technical staff. In order to be considered for this position, US citizenship is required.

Salary and benefits offered will be commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the candidates.
