The University of Virginia Recreation Department is seeking qualified applicants for Program Instructors. These are part-time, wage positions with the primary purpose of directly leading progression-based instructional program classes with participants to meet the interests and demands of the University community (students, faculty, staff, UVA affiliates and non-members).
Experience and skills needed are specific to the type of class being instructed. Classes include, but are not limited to: Couch to 5K, Self-Defense Conditioning, Beginner Weight Training, TRX, Boxing and more. Classes are typically made up of 5-15 individuals in a group setting. Each program will typically meet 1-2 times per week over the course of 6-8 weeks throughout the semester.
We are seeking instructors with the ability to fully engage with participants in vibrant activities that promote fitness and wellness and other personal interests including identifying the need for and modifying movements for participant safety. Ideal candidates will have the availability to consistently work a pre-determined schedule throughout the semester. Instructors are expected to attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and in-service sessions.
Instructors are expected to establish a positive rapport and relationship with student and departmental staff, members and guests of the facility as well as promote exceptional customer service to create a positive environment for members and guests. Instructors are also expected to maintain a Standard of Excellence in professionalism and safety.

Position Compensation Range: $20.00-$35.00 Hourly

Additional Job Description Required Qualifications:
High School Diploma or Equivalent Required

Certifications are not required; however a working knowledge and ability to teach a specific type of program is necessary. Classes could include any that currently are offered by the UVA Recreation Department or new ideas specifically of interest to the candidate.
Instructors need to have the ability to design and lead a specialized program to include lesson plans, teaching progressions, and program outcomes.
Basic administrative skills are required, such as: taking class attendance, effective communication with students, members, and other staff, and simple record-keeping skills.
An effective Programs Instructor will have an energetic personality and passion for teaching their respective program or class. The ideal candidate will be able to teach a group of individuals a specific skill or program over the course of a 6-to-8-week period during the semester.
