Job Duties

Virginia operates 12 facilities: eight behavioral health facilities for adults, a training center, a psychiatric facility for children and adolescents, a medical center, and a center for behavioral rehabilitation. State facilities provide highly structured, intensive services for individuals with mental illness, intellectual disability or are in need of substance use disorder services.

DBHDS is seeking experienced Clinical Psychologists to evaluate individuals with serious mental disorders and provide and/or refer for needed services; collaborate with other disciples to maximize the quality of interdisciplinary care; participate in planning for an effective transition and continued recovery in a community care setting; participate in Departmental, Hospital, and state-wide committees and duties; and provide services at a system level (such as forensic evaluations).

The Clinical Psychologist will also prioritize and provide need psychological services (assessments, therapy, etc.); lead/co-lead PSR groups each week; conduct initial psychology assessment of patients admitted/transferred to assigned team; assess/make recommendations for patients who exceed behavioral criteria for complex cases; attend treatment planning and review meetings to provide input and recommendations from a psychological perspective; completes TPC and progress notes; and perform forensic evaluations in according with applicable legal and professional standards.

Eastern State Hospital-Williamsburg, Virginia
Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute- Falls Church, Virginia
Piedmont Geriatric Center-Burkeville, Virginia
Southern Virginia Mental Health Institute- Danville, Virginia
Western State Hospital-Staunton, Virginia

Minimum Qualifications

- PhD or PsyD in Clinical or Counseling Psychology form a program accredited by the American Psychological Association
- License (or license-eligible) to practice Clinical Psychology in Virginia
- Demonstrated experience in applying psychological assessment and intervention methods to individuals with serious mental disorders
- Completion (or eligible to complete) the forensic evaluation training program in Virginia
- Knowledge of serious mental disorders, psychological assessments, and therapeutic interventions
- Ability to assess, formulate, and provide interventions for individuals with serious mental disorders
- Ability to conduct individual and group psychotherapy
- Ability to administer and interpret common psychological assessment measures
- Consultation skills for the assessment, management, and treatment of individuals with serious mental disorders
- Interpersonal, oral, and writing skills to communicate effectively with individuals with serious mental disorders, family members, and other individuals of varying backgrounds
- Ability to collaborate with other disciplines to provide interdisciplinary care
