The vision of the Board of Education and the Superintendent of Public Instruction is to ensure, through high academic expectations, standards and accountability, that effective education programs are established and maintained in Virginia’s public elementary, middle, and high schools. The mission, in cooperation with local school boards and colleagues within the Department, is to increase student learning and achievement and to support the growth of excellence and best practices that spark student engagement and postsecondary readiness.
The Division for Student Outcomes and School Quality seeks to ensure every school in Virginia is supporting the learning and academic development of students from early childhood through 12th grade. This includes implementing federal and state accountability requirements, ensuring assessments align with these requirements and providing meaningful information to support student learning, overseeing instructional improvement planning, and supporting related initiatives of the Governor, General Assembly, and Virginia Board of Education. The division is responsible for prioritizing student outcomes and performance, Virginia’s School Performance and Support Framework, strengthening and scaling school quality resources, supporting effective practices for student improvement, and providing technical assistance to teachers and schools in greatest need. The enhanced Division will also have a component dedicated solely to excellence and best practices to better support teachers, principals, and school leaders with replicating and scaling what is most effective for student learning. The Division plays a critical role in providing insights on outcomes and measurement strategies for school models and strategies that strengthen personalization, acceleration, pathways, and other innovative strategies in teaching and learning.
The Regional Mathematics Coordinator provides customized, regionalized support directly to school divisions, teachers, and leaders informed by data to improve student outcomes. This position, under the leadership of the Mathematics Director, (i) reviews mathematics instruction, assessment scores, and learning outcomes in the Commonwealth to identify potential areas for improvement; (ii) identify evidence-based and proven best practices to improve mathematics instruction and student performance; (iii) establish the framework for and support the implementation of professional learning strategies for educators and school systems; (iv) administer state funds provided to school divisions as appropriate; (v) collaborate with school boards and division superintendents to support the implementation of competency-based and evidence-based mathematics learning, provide recommendations on best practices, and facilitate professional learning opportunities for educators; (vi) oversee the statewide professional development framework for evidence-based teacher training, provide instructional guides and evidence-based resources, and facilitate regional professional development networks on improving mathematics; and (vii) collect data to analyze student mathematics progress and report the impact on student success across the Commonwealth.
