Research Specialist/Coordinator, Public Health Sciences

The Department of Public Health Sciences in the School of Medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA) is currently seeking a motivated public health and/or behavioral science professional to act as a Research Coordinator/Specialist to support the execution of several community-based research projects. The research projects are related to obesity, and cancer. This position is with Dr. Becca Krukowski’s team and in affiliation with the UVA’s Community-Based Health Equity Research Program and the UVACCC Cancer Prevention and Population Health (CPH) Program.

Research Specialist/Coordinator employees help to develop, design, and conduct one or more small to moderately complex research projects in line with plans. They report to one or more faculty members or senior research personnel, operate with a degree of independence, and help improve research approach and methods based on knowledge and experience.

The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Help develop study protocols and IRB submissions.
  • Collect and verify data relating to human subject’s research.
  • Interact with participants.
  • Assist with qualitative and quantitative data management and analysis.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in public health, behavioral science, health sciences or related field.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • A Master's degree in nutrition, physical activity, public health, behavioral science, health sciences, or related field OR a Bachelor's degree in nutrition, public health, behavioral science, health sciences, or related field with two years relevant work experience is required. Experience gained as a student will be considered.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to follow instructions.
  • Excellent communication skills, including with diverse audiences for recruitment and participant management efforts.
  • The ability to understand research processes and knowledge of general research procedures, including survey procedures.
  • Proficiency with computer software, including Word, Power Point and Excel.
  • Experience with community-based lifestyle behavioral trials and grant funded projects.
  • Experience with data entry and conducting simple statistical analyses.


Physical Demands :

This position is located in Charlottesville, VA This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers.

This position is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding and performance. This is an Non-Exempt level, benefited position. For more information on the benefits at UVA, visit hr.virginia.edu/benefits .

This position will remain open until filled. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment. A completed pre-employment health screen is required for this position prior to employment.

Anticipated Hiring Range:

$45,000-$55,000 commensurate with education and experience.
