Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

DJJ is seeking a Residential Violence Intervention Specialist. The role of the Residential Violence Intervention Specialist is to develop, implement, and monitor gang and violence intervention program planning for reduced recidivism and improved intervention services, and ensure appropriate allocation of services and personnel in support of program objectives.

Responsibilities include, but limited to:

  • Use violence intervention strategies and programming to combat further involvement of residents already identified to be in gangs or have a history of violence.
  • Support former gangs involved residents with strategies and techniques to prevent relapse
  • Consistently deliver gang/violence intervention and positive youth leadership development programming to residents within Juvenile Correctional Centers and/or CPPs
  • Immediately intervenes in behavioral crisis situations to ensure safety through the use of approved intervention/de-escalation strategies and techniques.
  • Works the Director of Violence Intervention and Violence Intervention Manager to develop and implement annual program action plans with measurable goals, objectives, and activities that will improve the outcomes of services for residents with the JCC or CPPs.
  • Identify residents within Juvenile Correctional Centers at risk of gang involvement and provide intervention services, case management and support to combat involvement.
  • Should be able to assist in the performance of de-escalation with verbal or non-verbal commands, or physical intervention, when necessary.
  • Ensure a safe and healthy work environment through compliance with all safety procedures and practices.

This position will work mid-shift nights 11am-8pm, Mondays-Fridays, holidays, and weekends as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the juvenile justice system; case management guidelines, and juvenile justice program development;
  • Considerable knowledge and experience directly supervising youth on supervision status, at-risk, and delinquent, extensive history working with service providers, alternate placements, and detention center staff;
  • Extensive history working with in a juvenile correctional center setting, alternate placements, and detention center;
  • Considerable background in gang intervention or gun violence programming;
  • Ability to develop and plan policies, standards, regulations, legislation, goals, and strategies; to interpret data, policies and procedures and make recommendations related to management and operational issues and resource deployment;
  • Demonstrated ability to independently gather and interpret data, draw conclusions, and implement solutions; write grants; clearly present information in written and verbal formats; manage multiple tasks and projects; work independently;
  • Ability to utilize Microsoft and other computer software including spreadsheets, word processing, data bases, and presentation packages;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff from various levels of agency operations.

  • Training and/or experience in research, public administration, criminal justice, or a related field.
