Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

DJJ is seeking a Risk Assessment Specialist. This role will provide evidence based psychological evaluation and treatment services to residents in order to promote their well-being and rehabilitation as well as reduce the likelihood of recidivism.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

  • Assesses functioning of assigned residents through accepted psychological evaluation methods.
  • Evaluates the efficacy of treatment and formulates recommendations to improve treatment outcome and risk management.
  • Completes written and/or oral reports by the due date at least 90% of the time.
  • Provides documentation of treatment plans, psychological evaluations, risk assessments and progress notes that provide an integrated conceptualization of a client’s criminogenic and mental health needs and document the strategies to engage the client and his support system in making progress toward and sustaining positive outcomes.

Please note this is a wage position. This position will work 29 hours or less per week, with no benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of theory and evidence-based practices for treatment of delinquent juveniles, including those with co-occurring mental disorders.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and techniques used to psychological assessment for diagnosis, treatment planning, and treatment evaluation.
  • Knowledge of developmental psychopathology and interventions to reduce risk factors and enhance protective factors for this population.
  • Competencies in individual, group and family psychotherapies.
  • Ability to function effectively as a part of an interdisciplinary team which includes community partners.
  • Ability to enhance a juveniles’ ability to transition back to his family or other community placement.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and an ability to function independently.

Additional Considerations

  • Considerable experience and/or training in clinical or counseling psychology.
  • Experience conducting psychological assessments.
  • Experience providing treatment services to the juvenile delinquent population.
  • Licensure as a clinical psychologist.
  • Certification by the Department of Health Professions as a sex offender treatment provider (CSOTP) and /or a substance abuse counselor (SCAC).
