Scientific/Grant Writer Position- Cancer Center

  • The UVA Comprehensive Cancer Center (UVACCC) seeks a scientific grant writer/editor or senior grant writer/editor to provide expert writing and editing support for UVACCC members drafting NIH and other extramural, peer-reviewed grant applications and to identify and communicate open extramural funding opportunities to the UVACCC community. The scientific/grant writer will assist the Associate Director of Research Development and Collaborations in editing, tracking, and finalizing large multi-institutional, multi-project, and multi-investigator applications for submission. This is not a clinical protocol writer position. This would be a hybrid position but a remote option might be considered.


Responsibilities include:

Grant-writing support :
  • Reviews, edits (grammar, punctuation, clarity), and formats documents
  • Develops and maintains templates with example text for non-technical grant components
  • Works with investigators to draft and solicit letters of support
  • Collects and organizes documents for submission and works with appropriate grants administrators to ensure smooth submission process
  • Keeps abreast of sponsor requirements and develops guidelines as appropriate
  • Understands review criteria and ensures compliance
  • Communicates with funding agency staff as necessary

Funding opportunities:
  • Identifies newly opened cancer-specific funding initiatives
  • Prepares content for weekly email to UVACCC members - includes coordination with internal funding administrators and communications team
  • Creates and maintains opportunities through iTHRIV portal


Minimum Requirements Grant Writer/Editor
Education: Bachelor's degree in English or Communications or a related field.
Experience: At least three years of experience

Minimum Requirement Senior Writer/Editor

Education: Bachelor's degree in related field. Master's degree preferred.
Experience: At least five years of experience

Preferred Qualifications

Education: Advanced degree in biomedical science or health profession.
Experience: Oncology experience. Proficient with reference management software

Skills including:
  • Demonstrated ability to write, edit, and proofread medical and scientific documents
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office products (especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat
  • Exceptional organization and attention to detail
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and adapt to changing priorities without supervision
  • Exceptional attention to detail


Anticipated salary: $70,000 with UVA benefits.

Physical Demands
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
