Job Duties

The VDOE Office of STEM is seeking qualified individuals to provide highly complex professional, analytical, and/or technical expertise in the area of mathematics. Responsibilities are multifaceted and involve independent and team decision making related to mathematics instruction in the K-12 classroom setting with application of broad technical expertise. Responsibilities include assisting with the coordination of projects and programs that support the state’s Mathematics Standards of Learning program and providing information, services, assistance, expertise, and leadership in:

• providing professional training and implementation supports for school divisions with high-quality instructional materials, supplemental and intervention materials, and evidence-based mathematics research;
• developing, administering, and implementing projects, activities, and services that impact statewide mathematics achievement of students including multilingual learners and students with special needs;
• supporting educators and leaders in the field with the implementation of the 2023 Mathematics Standards of Learning
• reviewing, developing, organizing, implementing mathematic instructional materials, and assessment materials and procedures, with a particular focus on mathematics instruction;
• facilitating the development and interpretation of policies and procedures that impact mathematics programs and student achievement; and
• developing, implementing, and facilitating mathematics technical assistance and professional development at the state level and with divisions in a regional approach and capacity.


Travel to School Divisions as needed is required based on locality.

Minimum Qualifications

• Comprehensive knowledge of evidence-based reading research, the most up to date mathematics practices, and K-12 mathematics education with a focus on quality professional development.
• Recognized ability as an expert in mathematics education, with comprehensive knowledge of evidence-based mathematics research and instructional practices.
• Considerable experience with the development and implementation of mathematics curricula, instructional and assessment resources, and professional development.
• Considerable knowledge of the Virginia Standards of Learning program, local school divisions, state and local government policies and procedures, and state agency functions.
• Highly developed interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
• Highly organized and able to independently manage time and workload, adjust work schedules to meet new or emerging priorities, meet schedules consistently, forecast developing trends, and work collaboratively with and lead staff members, in both K-12 and higher education, in complex initiatives.
• Skills in utilizing computer software for word processing, graphical presentation, databases, spreadsheets, and other technological systems and resources to complete assigned responsibilities.

Additional Considerations

• An advanced degree within the discipline of mathematics or mathematics education is preferred.
• Experience at the central office level or in another leadership position is preferred.
• Experience in professional development, project management, resource allocation, and budgeting is preferred.
• Experience in developing K-12 Mathematics educational programs or services as well as program administration and long-range planning is preferred.
• Experience working with institutes of higher education to develop and/or manage K-12 Mathematics education projects or initiatives is desired.
