Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services is seeking one qualified individual to work in the Seed Laboratory within the Office of Plant Industry Services. The seed analyst will perform analysis of seeds in accordance with the Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) Rules for Testing Seeds. The position is responsible for the scientific analysis and testing of seeds utilizing laboratory methods, testing and other procedures to determine compliance with the Virginia Seed Law, the Federal Seed Act, the rules and regulations of the AOSA, and the Virginia Certified Seed Program, administered by the Virginia Crop Improvement Association. The successful candidate will perform laboratory testing in purity and germination to ensure truth-in-labeling for commercial seed lots and labeling analysis for Virginia growers for the marketing of their seed products.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidate must have working knowledge of seed, seedling, and plant morphology. The candidate must be able to follow proscribed laboratory policies and interpret, apply and explain complex standards set by the Virginia Seed Law, Federal Seed Act and the Association of Official Seed Analyst (AOSA). This position requires good hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity; ability to distinguish colors, working with small seeds using microscopes and small instruments such as tweezers. The ability to manipulate small seeds and seedling is essential. The successful candidate should be able to concentrate and focus on work for extended periods of time and work with limited supervision. Basic knowledge of agricultural crops grown in Virginia is desired. This position involves working around peanuts, wheat, dust and chemically treated seeds. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office software. Must be able to see colors. H.S. Diploma/GED required.

Additional Considerations

A combination of related education, training and experience indicating possession of the preceding knowledge, skills, and abilities to include knowledge of in Botany, Biology, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related agricultural science.
