Established in 1970, SVCC is one of the 23 colleges in the Virginia Community College System. SVCC is an accessible, comprehensive, public, two-year institution of higher education that serves approximately 183,000 residents from the counties of Brunswick, Buckingham (partial), Charlotte, Cumberland, Greensville, Halifax (partial), Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, and Prince Edward, and the city of Emporia. Southside Virginia Community College, is seeking a Simulation Laboratory Coordinator. The Nursing Lab Coordinator - Simulation collaborates with other nursing department members to perform duties essential to achieving the departmental goals for simulation. The primary purpose of this position is to function as a planner, developer, consultant, coordinator, resource person, and instructor to faculty and students in the Simulation lab. Overseas information technology systems, connectivity, functionality, operations programming, and software maintenance throughout the simulation in conjunction with SVCC IT staff. The Simulation Laboratory Coordinator is under the direction of the Dean of Nursing and Health Technologies and works closely with full-time faculty, students, and staff at Southside Virginia Community College.
Characteristics, Duties, and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Administer the Nursing Simulation Laboratory
Consult with the nursing faculty, the program director, and the Dean of Nursing on best practices and schedules and assist and maintain the grant process as needed for the simulation environment
Establishing and updating policies and standard practices related to the use of simulation technology, The Simulation Lab will collaborate with SVHEC to ensure a consistent educational experience and scenario continuum, fostering alignment and standardization across both sites
Developing, presenting, evaluating, and refining scenarios utilized for simulation experiences utilizing role-playing, props, and dialogue to create a realistic learning environment
Developing new simulation experiences based on student or faculty-identified needs and serving as a resource for faculty who utilize simulation in classroom or lab activities
Mentoring and providing in-person training, sharing created simulation content with colleagues (SVHEC Sim Lab Coordinator), (Sim Tech)
On/Offboard a new hire and work-study in collaboration with HR as needed
Ensures a safe and healthy work environment by complying with college health and safety policies, standard practices, and programs in keeping with occupational health & safety legislation and regulations
Simulation lab technology maintenance
Collaborate with the SVCC I.T. department to earn administrative rights and to be oriented to VLAN, routers, and switch usage at the Estes Center
Equipment setup and breakdown, including setting up patient simulators, task trainers, hospital equipment (in-situ simulations), supplies, and audiovisual equipment
Patient simulators come with proprietary software to control the anticipated physiological changes. Simulation technicians program these changes and anticipate interventions. They also operate this software during simulation activities. Sim Capture will need interventions programmed for each simulation embedded into software for "quick click" annotations during simulation/evaluation for instructors to view and for debriefing purposes
Administration and operation of learning/center management systems to record simulations, manage case information, collect faculty and standardized patient evaluations, track learner contact hours, and report on center data and utilization data required for the Board of Nursing
Software (operating systems, applications, simulator software) management, maintenance, and implementation. Assist students with logging in using KIOSK for sim capture to track students at simulation, equipment usage, registration of manikins into the system, etc. The kiosk system will require adding and removing students each semester
Operate software can be spontaneous (without or with minimal programming) or useexisting programmed scenarios
Operate audiovisual support for courses can include the audiovisual equipment primarily used for live streaming and reviewing simulation activities, video production equipment, and other types of media for content delivery. Playback recordings must be prepared after each phase during debrief sessions or for individual self-review or faculty review
Maintain and secure or delete videos according to the Board of Nursing guidelines
All simulators need on-site maintenance, regardless of the type. Depending on the lab schedule, manikins must be updated and converted. Necessary maintenance could be as simple as regular cleaning and replacing disposable parts or as complex as tracking down an electrical or networking issue (within warranty guidelines)
Maintenance of case scenarios: edits after simulation and updated scenarios to include alignment of Concept-Based Curriculum (ADN), Admission ticket, EMR, facilitator packet, specifics, charge nurse expectations, pre-sim equipment orientation, etc
Research and implementation of new technologies, simulators, and task trainers
Maintains the simulation inventory system
Ensuring the completion of an annual inventory of the Nursing Simulation Laboratories
Preparing tenders and ordering supplies as needed in the Nursing Simulation
Ensuring the safe storage of hazardous materials, including medications
Equipment setup and breakdown of the simulations, additional equipment
Overseeing the collection and disposal of waste materials according to regulations
Determining the inventory needs for the Nursing Simulation Laboratory and campus laboratory
Scheduling use of the lab/equipment
Participates in and contributes to the upkeep of the Nursing Simulation Laboratory
Providing advice & orientation to instructors regarding simulation laboratory procedures, location and use of materials, and the operation of equipment
Recommending and/or performing general cleaning in the nursing simulation laboratory
Recommending and/or performing equipment maintenance or repairs in the nursing simulation laboratory, initiating and coordinating approved simulation laboratory renovations and repairs
Participates in and contributes to a safe environment in the Nursing Simulation and Laboratories
Keeping current with safety regulations
Establishing, updating, and maintaining safety policy within the Nursing Simulation lab
Checking and maintaining safety equipment, loading medication dispensing machines per scheduled simulation, prep for each simulation, and verifying supplies are readily available for the semester
Provide training and enforcement of safety procedures to individuals, including faculty, students, and staff using the simulation laboratory
Participates in and contributes to the learning needs of students in nursing programs
Serving as a resource for faculty utilizing simulation in classroom/lab activities
Independently, or in conjunction with other faculty/college personnel, assists students in realizing course objectives through utilization of the High Fidelity Simulation or Human Patient Simulation (HPS)
Provide student progress feedback to students and instructors
Utilizing instructional methods that promote student development of critical thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, clinical competency, and life-long learning
Refer students to lead faculty regarding necessary remediation.
Conduct tours and simulation sessions for internal/external groups and/or individuals
In-situ simulation responsibilities may include:
Supporting hospital or community-based quality improvement initiatives
Interfacing with departments to ensure room/space availability
Stringent accounting of simulation supplies and equipment to prevent mixing and accidental inclusion of simulated supplies,medication, or equipment to keep from reaching actual patients
Informs simulation laboratory coordinator of supplies needed in the Nursing Simulation and campus Laboratories
Recruitment of confederates or participants/volunteers
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required
Minimum of 2 years of acute care clinical experience in a healthcare setting
Required teaching experience in a clinical or academic setting, with a demonstrated ability to develop and deliver educational content effectively. Experience in simulation-based learning or education is preferred
Proven proficiency in computer applications and IT knowledge, including experience with simulation technology and software
Ability to operate and maintain networked computer systems and audiovisual equipment
Ability to assess, troubleshoot, and resolve equipment failures promptly
Ability to independently and safely lift simulation and training equipment (25 lbs. or less) and move manikins to and from facilities (over 25 pounds)
Proficiency in developing and delivering training for technical equipment and coaching audiences with varied technical expertise
Must be willing to complete job-related training as applicable and enroll in identified IT classes/medical terminology classes as deemed necessary within six months of hire
Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams
Ability to work independently and maintain productivity.
Excellent and strong proven communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with students, faculty, and staff
Must be available to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
Must be able to travel around and outside the region occasionally. Some overnight travel may be required
Additional Considerations:
Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)
At least 1 year of teaching experience in simulation-based education or related fields
Experience teaching in a community college setting is highly preferred
Ability to prepare and organize simulation laboratory and demonstration materials
Ability to set priorities on own initiative
Ability to work in a team environment
Ability to work a flexible schedule and accommodate change
Extensive experience or certification in information technology, information systems technology, or health-related fields
Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support Certification
