Job Description:
Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. Reynolds is currently seeking applicants for a Sociology Instructor position which will be assigned to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. This position has a Fall 2025 semester start date. This position will primarily be located on the college’s Parham Road Campus. In addition to teaching responsibilities, this role will also provide administrative support and programmatic oversight to the School of Humanities and Social Sciences as the Pre-Social Work Program Chair.

The role includes, but is not limited to, the following duties:

  • Teach up to five (5) courses in two or more areas of Sociology each semester
  • Maintain a faculty load of at least 15 credit hours per semester
  • Hold regular office hours, provide academic advising, and participate in other required institutional commitments on campus
  • Deliver instruction in a variety of formats, including on-campus, Zoom, HyFlex, and asynchronous modalities
  • Be available to teach day and/or evening classes as needed across multiple campus and off-campus locations, including dual enrollment courses in local high schools
  • Summer teaching opportunities may be available based on student interest and enrollment demand
Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Sociology, or a master’s degree in another field with a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in Sociology
  • Experience teaching a variety of sociology courses across multiple modalities, including in-person, hybrid, and fully online formats.
  • Familiarity with best practices in culturally responsive pedagogy and inclusive teaching strategies.
  • Experience designing or revising curriculum aligned with program and institutional learning outcomes.
  • Proven ability to support student success through proactive academic advising, mentoring, or student engagement initiatives.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to departmental or institutional assessment, accreditation, or continuous improvement processes.
  • Strong record of professional development or scholarly engagement in the field of sociology or related disciplines.
  • Experience collaborating with faculty on interdisciplinary teaching or community-based learning initiatives.
  • Ability to integrate Open Educational Resources (OER) and/or affordable course content into instruction.
  • Experience using data to evaluate student learning outcomes and make instructional adjustments.
  • Knowledge of community college mission and experience working in open-access institutions serving diverse student populations.
