Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

DJJ is seeking a Special Agent/Investigator to protect the integrity of the department by conducting investigations of allegations of wrongdoing that negatively reflect on or impact the department, its personnel, or its operations. This position is critical to maintaining a safe and secure environment by providing thorough, comprehensive, objective investigations and providing assistance to local, federal, and state enforcement agencies in all matters of mutual interest. Assists in the design, development and delivery of program and policy training in response to the needs of Department employee groups. Provides assistance related to DJJ training and programming to staff in the community and within the institutions.

Responsibilities include:

  • Communication – must be able to communicate in a clear, concise, and confident manner verbally and in written form. Information must be delivered clearly and accurately.
  • Requires the ability to read and understand Federal, State, and Local Laws, Virginia and DJJ policies and procedures.
  • Requires the ability to maintain Law Enforcement VA DCJS Certification (if applicable).
  • Requires continued and updated training regarding conducting PREA investigations.
  • In-person work with the public to include DJJ staff and /or juveniles in DJJ care.
  • In-person work with DJJ-supervised juveniles, their families, and DJJ staff both in the office and within the community.
  • Requires periodic on-call work, including after-hours (1700 – 0800) and weekends.
  • Requires the ability to work day and/or night shifts as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge of criminal laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Working knowledge of agency policies and procedures; and, methods and techniques of administrative and criminal investigations, and information-gathering.
  • Demonstrated ability to gather and analyze information; to interpret and apply laws; to compile information, appraise information as evidence, conduct investigations, and determine recommendations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, prepare comprehensive written investigative reports, and develop and manage confidential sources of information.

  • DCJS Law Enforcement certification.
  • PREA Investigations experience.
  • DCJS General Instructor certification.
  • DCJS Specialty Instructor certification.
  • VCIN/NCIC operator certification.
