Summary

VCU Parking & Transportation’s Special Events unit assists with nearly 200 events per year, handling events ranging from just a few attendees to over 8,000. This unit is responsible for parking over 100,000 cars and counting each year. Individuals within this unit of Parking & Transportation are responsible for processing credit card transactions, directing traffic safely to parking spaces, ensuring folks walk safely from their vehicles to their event, and safely exiting the parking area at the end of the event. Individuals may be responsible for setting up block offs, controlling zoned off areas such as ADA, and providing customers with information concerning the event or Parking & Transportation. Individuals will be traffic trained to control traffic anywhere in the state of Virginia.

This is a dynamic, fast-paced role that requires teamwork, adaptability, and a strong customer-focused mindset. Ideal candidates are dependable, professional, and capable of creating a positive experience for all who visit VCU. Position may work in all types of weather conditions.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Credit Card/Entrance Transactions
  • Process credit card transactions via POS handheld device at parking location entrance
  • Process pre-pay transactions via the POS handheld device at parking location entrance
  • Reconcile POS handheld device at end of the event

Traffic Control
  • Provide traffic control at various points throughout the parking location
  • May include controlling a section of a parking garage for ADA or VIP parkers and controlling access to that section
  • Controlling elevator pedestrian flow for high profile/high attendee events such as high school graduation

Providing Information
  • Answer questions related to Parking & Transportation operations
  • Answer questions related to the event (such as where to go, best way to get there, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned by Event Supervisor

Minimum Hiring Standards
  • Must be dependable and available to work a flexible schedule that will vary based on occurrence of scheduled events; shifts include evenings, weekends, and some holidays
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, including holidays
  • Must have the ability to lift up to 50lbs.
  • Must have good verbal and written communication skills and exceptional customer service skills
  • Ability to successfully complete all training
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Prior customer service experience, preferably in a fast-paced or public-facing environment
  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of visitors, faculty, staff and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member of VCU

Preferred Hiring Standards
  • Experience handling electronic payments using credit card machines or similar equipment
