Job Duties

The Western Tidewater Health District is seeking a highly motivated individual to join our Material Management team as a Store & Warehouse Specialist (Storekeeper)! The Western Tidewater Health District services the City of Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Southampton County, and The City of Franklin. We assist in carrying out the VDH mission by detecting the needs of our community and providing quality care. This position will be based at the Suffolk Health Department and will require travel to support all 4 health departments in the district.

The storekeeper independently receives, classifies, and stores incoming stock; pulls, packs, and ships orders assigned by supervisor; ensures incoming and outgoing orders are checked against invoice/packing list; counts and inventories as assigned; assists with cleanup and storage of records; distributes supplies; and conducts periodic inventories. May back up mail/messenger staff delivering mail, lab specimens, and bank deposits.

Typical duties include:

  • Place routine supply orders in eVA
  • Receive and check orders for accuracy.
  • Assist with annual inventory.
  • Assist Emergency Planner with Inventory.
  • Assist IT Specialist with counts and inventory.
  • Prepare packages to be shipped.
  • Assist with coordinating and scheduling maintenance of fleet vehicles.
  • Daily mail/bank run

    THIS IS A WAGE POSITION

    Wage employees are subject to the following conditions of employment:
    • Wage employees serve at the will and pleasure of the appointing authority.
    • Continuing employment is based on available funding and business need.
    • Wage employees are not covered by the provisions of the Virginia Personnel Act. Therefore, they are not eligible for benefits which are provided to salaried employees, such as leave credits, holiday pay, insurance, access to the grievance procedure, etc.
    • Wage employees are paid only for the hours they actually work.
    • Virginia state law currently requires that agencies not permit wage employees to work in excess of 29 hours per week on average over the course of a year. Wage employees may not work for VDH beyond 1,500 hours during the period of May 1 – April 30 of the following year (the Standard Measurement Period).
    • Once a wage employee works the maximum of 1,500 hours during the Standard Measurement Period, the employee may be rehired as a wage employee of VDH only after the next Standard Measurement Period has begun.
    • Wage employees are eligible to apply for all classified positions for which recruitment has been initiated, including those limited to State Employees Only.
    • If a wage employee becomes employed in a classified position, he/she will be eligible to purchase retirement credit for the time worked as a wage employee.
    • Continuing employment is based on available funding and business need.

Minimum Qualifications

• Working knowledge of general storeroom operations and procedures,
including inventory control
• Computer and typing skills and the ability to key information into automated
databases; working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite; working knowledge
of calculator and familiarity with completing forms/internal documentation
• Ability to lift or move heavy objects up to and including 30 - 60 lbs
• Ability to communicate and interact effectively with the public and coworkers
• Strong organizational and customer services skills

Additional Considerations

• Prior experience as a storekeeper responsible for security and issuance of large inventory including office/medical/cleaning/miscellaneous supplies
