Build the Systems That Build Careers
Ever wondered how large organizations help employees grow from entry-level to leadership? You're about to find out, by building those systems yourself. We're looking for two interns to help develop DMV's career pathing and performance management framework.
Why This Matters
The Virginia DMV employs approximately 3,000 people across the Commonwealth. Right now, we're designing new career development opportunities for our entire workforce, and you'll be part of the team creating the roadmap. This isn't HR paperwork; it's organizational strategy that impacts thousands of careers.
The Project:
Design career frameworks, build data dashboards, and help shape talent strategies.
You'll work on two interconnected initiatives: creating career pathing tools and developing the metrics that measure their success.
What You'll Build:
Career Pathing Framework:
Design career maps for various functional areas across DMV
Develop policy guidelines and practical tools
Build SharePoint resources employees can use
Create pathways showing how people can grow within the organization
Performance Metrics & Analytics:
Develop metrics to measure organizational effectiveness
May include PowerBI dashboard development (great resume line)
Create reports that support data-informed leadership decisions
Track impact of career development initiatives
Your Deliverables:
Career maps for multiple DMV departments
Metrics framework measuring effectiveness
Interactive dashboards and analytical reports
Policy documentation and employee-facing tools
What You'll Actually Learn:
Technical Skills:
Data visualization and dashboard development (PowerBI)
SharePoint site design
Metrics development and performance measurement
Data analysis for strategic decision-making
Strategic Skills:
Organizational development and workforce planning
Career framework design
Stakeholder engagement across departments
How large public-sector organizations plan for and develop talent strategies
Resume Translation: "Developed career pathing framework and performance analytics serving approximately 2,000state employees"
Why This Experience Is Valuable:
Every organization - government, corporate, nonprofit - needs people who understand how to develop talent and measure organizational effectiveness. You'll see the HR strategy side, the data analytics side, and the policy development side all in one project. Plus, you'll learn PowerBI, which is in high demand across industries.
