The Sustainable Transportation Assistant provides customer service to Hokie Bike Hub customers. The position mainly instructs customers in bicycle maintenance and repair and answers questions about sustainable transportation programs and services offered by Virginia Tech. The Assistant works the customer service desk and responds to phone calls and voicemails to communicate with customers. They display a strong work ethic that effectively motivates team members to perform their best. The incumbent also fosters collaboration and finds diplomatic solutions as needed.
The incumbent helps to maintain the campus FixIt Stations and Secure Bicycle Parking Area. The Assistant also represents the Department at various campus and community events, such as Sustainable Transportation Fair, bike to campus days, resource fairs, etc. The Assistant occasionally performs light custodial work.
The incumbent also performs other duties as requested; takes initiative to support a healthy work environment; strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct; exemplifies the Virginia Tech Principles of Community; and supports the university’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
Required Qualifications
Experience
• Demonstrated experience working on bicycles.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
• Problem solving skills.
• Strong customer service skills, including the ability to resolve customer issues efficiently and tactfully.
• Ability to complete tasks with varying levels of importance.
• Ability to answer and route phone calls, as well as respond to voicemail messages in a timely manner. and transfer them accurately and promptly to the appropriate staff member.
• Positive, enthusiastic, and generous energy and communication in all interactions with team members and customers.
• Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends to meet the needs of the department.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience diagnosing, assembling, disassembling, and repairing various bicycle types, including knowledge of drivetrain systems, brakes (hydraulic and mechanical), suspensions, wheel truing, and flat tire repair.
• Competence in using specialized bike tools and equipment for repairs and adjustments.
• Demonstrated experience diagnosing and explaining issues/problems to customers and training and/or teaching others in a proactive environment.
