Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Taxation is seeking a highly skilled Senior Tax Auditor to serve as a lead auditor for the Northern Virginia region. This role plays a key part in supporting the agency’s strategic plan and advancing our mission to ensure tax compliance and reduce the tax gap for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

This position provides leadership, technical expertise, and administrative support to audit team members, all of whom work remotely from locations throughout Northern Virginia. The Senior Tax Auditor will conduct both routine and complex audits, with a primary focus on Sales and Use Tax, while also offering training, coaching, and guidance to other auditors in the region. The role additionally supports the audit supervisor in managing program operations and ensuring alignment with the agency’s values and culture.

Key Responsibilities
• Conduct complex and routine tax audits, with a focus on Sales and Use Tax
• Serve as a lead auditor, providing day to day technical guidance and assistance to audit staff
• Coach, train, and mentor auditors to build team capability and ensure quality work products
• Assist the audit supervisor with administrative tasks and program management
• Interpret and apply tax laws, regulations, and policies to audit findings
• Analyze electronic data, financial documents, and accounting records
• Communicate clearly and professionally with taxpayers and representatives
• Work independently in a remote environment while meeting deadlines and performance expectations
• Travel throughout the Northern Virginia region for onsite audit work, with occasional overnight travel


Residency Requirement

Applicants must reside in one of the following Northern Virginia counties: Loudoun, Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, Stafford, Fauquier, Culpeper, Warren, Clarke, Frederick, Spotsylvania, Orange, Greene, Caroline, or King George.

 

The anticipated salary for this position is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Applicants must reside in one of the following Northern Virginia counties: Loudoun, Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, Stafford, Fauquier, Culpeper, Warren, Clarke, Frederick, Spotsylvania, Orange, Greene, Caroline, or King George.

Accounting and/or auditing experience in a professional work environment

Ability to proficiently use a windows-based computer to create, compile, manipulate, transmit, and analyze electronic data including spreadsheets, databases, and word processing

Must have a valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and provide your own transportation. Ability to travel during the day and, occasionally, overnight

Must have a safe and private work area/room/office at home to work including a locking file cabinet and high-speed Internet service. (Must meet Internet Speed Test - see Special Instructions to Applicants)

Experience working remotely from home or working with minimal supervision in an office environment

Written and verbal communication skills

Knowledge of accounting and GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles)

 

 

Additional Considerations

 

Advanced skills, knowledge or ability in areas of taxes, audit, accounting or other relevant fields

Supervisory, managerial, or training experience
