The Virginia Commonwealth University Institute for Transformative Learning, part of the University College, has an exciting opportunity for a Transformative Learning Coordinator! Position Overview: The mission of the Institute for Transformative Learning at Virginia Commonwealth University is to support faculty and empower students through innovative educational experiences that combine rigorous academic research with meaningful community engagement. We aim to provide high-impact, hands-on opportunities, including research-supportive and community-engaged learning, research experiences, and service-learning partnerships. Our focus on experiential education fosters critical thinking, self-discovery, and personal growth, preparing students to become autonomous learners and active participants in their communities.
Reporting to the Director of Engaged Transformative Learning, the Transformative Learning Coordinator supports the mission of the Institute, specifically VCU’s Service-learning program and Relevant, Experiential and Applied Learning (REAL), to ensure that the university is meeting its goal of providing transformative, real-world experiences for all students.This position will work with the Director to implement, support, and advance these areas of transformative learning, supporting day-to-day operations of these programs. There are likely to be other duties as needed in support of the Institute for Transformative Learning.
Typical Duties The typical duties and responsibilities of the Transformative Learning Coordinator include, but are not limited to, the following:
Program Management, Training & Development:
- Support the Director of Engaged Transformative Learning in developing and implementing streamlined operations
- Provide support for the development and management of service-learning and REAL programming, opportunities, and processes.
- Create and manage communication processes and platforms with on- and off-campus stakeholders.
- Assist with the continued development of the Service-learning Teaching Assistant Program.
- Assist with maintaining program database(s) for data reporting and assessment.
- Work with the Director to maintain accurate program records and documentation, ensuring compliance with VCU’s policies and procedures.
- Participate in committees that assist in forming collaborative relationships with faculty and community members.
Training & Orientation:
- Coordinate and develop orientation and training sessions for faculty, staff, students, and community partners.
- Assist in creating and maintaining training materials and templates for faculty and community partners for best practices and consistency.
- Coordinate professional development opportunities for faculty.
Student Coordination & Support:
- Coordinate student outreach and marketing opportunities that will increase awareness of opportunities and programming.
- Manage the application and enrollment process for students.
- Support the teaching and development of service-learning teaching assistants.
Faculty/Staff Recruitment & Support:
- Work with the Director to provide support and guidance to the University community on requirements and processes for course proposals and renewals.
- Assist with the recruitment and training of faculty for programs and efforts.
- Provide support for and manage the application process for faculty.
- Engage with academic units to provide information to increase awareness of the Institute and offerings.
Campus & Community Engagement:
- Meet with college and other campus stakeholders for collaboration, support, and opportunities.
- Engage with colleagues in Community Engagement to stay abreast of programming and opportunities to connect with the community.
- Attend off-campus events with Director and/or Community Engagement colleagues to form relationships with community leaders and key partners.
- Provide information on opportunities to potential community partners, serving as a liaison for the unit.
