The Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as the VOSH Regional Safety Director. This full-time position is based in our Central Virginia Regional Office located in Henrico, VA. As a key member of our leadership team, you'll oversee the region’s Occupational Safety Compliance Program, driving initiatives that promote workplace safety, health and regulatory compliance across Virginia. You'll collaborate with stakeholders, provide guidance, and lead efforts to cultivate a culture of safety and accountability. Compensation and Benefits:
This position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, within the range of $90,000 to $110,000 annually.

• Provide strategic leadership and implement strategies for VOSH Safety programs. • Provide performance management leadership and performance support for employees. • Implement strategic initiatives, tactical plans, and establish infrastructure to ensure consistent interpretation and application of federal and state laws, regulations, and agency policies and operational procedures. • Develop individual and organizational capabilities to remain in compliance with the requirements of the OSHA 23g Grant. • Assess the effectiveness of regional operations, overseeing regional operations, and leading a team of Safety professionals and administrative staff. • Allocate Resources to address critical needs in support of the agency’s mission. • Conduct safety informal conferences; negotiate settlement agreements with employers. • Identify trends and patterns related to workplace injuries and illnesses. • Support training and collaborate with the Virginia Institute of Learning and Outreach (VILO) and leverage training opportunities for staff. • Professionally represent DOLI/VOSH in industry forums, meetings to share best practices.
Minimum Qualifications
What will you bring?
• Working knowledge of the principles and practices of occupational safety and health, safety management systems, and best practices. • Practical experience with occupational safety and health state and federal standards. • Knowledge of and application in policy research, development, implementation, and assessment. • Experience in developing individual and organizational capabilities. Ability to lead and develop professional, clerical, and technical staff. • Leadership skills: ability to implement vision, clearly communicate direction and drive to goal completion. • Experience leading teams effectively and managing day-to-day operations as a direct supervisor. • Team development skills with change management experience; accepts change with grace and understands change principles. • Excellent written, verbal, presentation and electronic communication skills; ability to communicate with all levels of the organization effectively, often communicating changes, complex issues or new ideas. • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment in dynamic situations. • Experience in a dynamic, fast-paced setting where managing moderate to high levels of stress is a regular part of the role. • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
Additional Considerations
• Certification in a safety or health discipline issued by a recognized organization such as the Board of Certified Safety Professionals or the Board for Global EHS Credentialing, including Certified Industry Hygienist (CIH), Certified Associate Industrial Hygienist (CAIH), Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Safety Manager (CSM), Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST), Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), or similar. • Experience leading OSHA or state plan activities. • Experience as an occupational safety and health professional in a private or public sector environment. • Familiarity with OSHA sampling techniques, conducting job hazard analyses and occupational safety exposure assessments.
Special requirements:
• Possession or ability to obtain a valid driver’s license within 30 days of hire. • Ability to travel overnight occasionally. • Must meet minimum duty requirements for the position as measured by the Agency’s Physical/Cognitive Checklist. • Ability to perform moderate physical activity that includes, but is not limited to climbing stairs and ladders, bending, walking up and down inclines, occasionally lifting and carrying loads up to 30 pounds, etc. • The selected candidate must successfully pass a criminal background investigation and successfully serve a 12-month probationary period effective from the date of employment if beginning employment as an original hire or re-employment.
