About the Department:

The Mason and Partners (MAP) Clinic is a network of nurse-managed free clinics in NOVA serving the uninsured and used as a training site for students enrolled in George Mason University's College of Public Health. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining and supporting the clinic’s health information systems and technology.

About the Position:

The Health Informatics Lead plays a vital role in the operations and health systems maintenance for the Mason and Partners Clinic, ensuring the delivery of high-quality care to uninsured patients.

The Health Informatics Lead works closely with the director, clinical operations coordinator, health systems data manager, providers, clinicians, operations specialists, medical assistants, and community health workers to maintain an efficient and compliant technical workflow for the benefit of all patients and students. This role is responsible for the implementation and maintenance of technical operations as they relate to day-to-day clinic functioning and special projects.

Responsibilities:

Management Support:

  • Assists the manager of the health information systems in tasks related to administrative support (scheduling interdisciplinary team meetings, organizing shared electronic files, handling correspondence during onboarding of new team members); data analysis; technology management, regulatory compliance, and project implementation;
  • Oversees Health Informatics (HI) students and supports individual and group-based intern projects;
  • Monitors work ethic and progress of HI students; and
  • Supervises HI students during all health informatics and management tasks while in clinic.

Data Management and Quality Control:

  • Uploads documentation (e.g., faxes, records) into patient charts;
  • Processes release of information requests and coordinates transmission of patient charts to other medical facilities;
  • Reviews charts and lab results in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system to monitor accurate data entry;
  • Ensures the consistency of practice in each chart across clinical sites;
  • Develops protocols and procedures for HI students as part of internship activities;
  • Performs EHR data extractions to support clinic quality management, administrative reporting, and other functions;
  • Assists with data collection to support MAP Clinic clinical and research activities; and
  • Assists with EHR system enrollment of all students onto digital platforms. 

Workflow Management:

  • Troubleshoots technical equipment as needed;
  • Maintains in-clinic flow;
  • Monitors the day-to-day technical workflow of the clinic;
  • Maintains the organization and inventory of office equipment and clinic documents and forms;
  • Supports EHR implementation and use in-clinic; and
  • Serves as a medical scribe to enter new patient data, lab results, vital signs, and schedule appointments. 

Collaboration:

  • Joins interdisciplinary workgroups on topics related to clinical operations and health informatics as assigned; and
  • Available for evening and weekend clinic support, as needed. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in health administration, health informatics, a related health information management degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Demonstrated experience in a health care setting in a role handling patient data and managing Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems;
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Management and Leadership:

  • Strong leadership qualities for guiding and supervising on-site Health Informatics (HI) interns;
  • Strong training skills for teaching healthcare staff and students on using information systems and Electronic Health Records (EHR);
  • Competence in administrative tasks, including inventory maintenance, seamless and HIPAA-secure data exchange, and appropriate allocation of resources; and
  • Effective conflict resolution, decision-making, and strategy-planning to implement clinic or special workgroup directions.

Data Quality, Security, and Privacy:

  • Proven ability in, and knowledge of, implementing and enforcing security measures to protect patient data and ensure compliance with health care privacy regulations, such as HIPAA; and
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to monitor and evaluate the quality of health information data.

Communication and Interpersonal Relations:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with professionals, patients, students, community partners, and vendors;
  • Ability to build and nurture professional relationships, emphasizing empathy and understanding; and
  • Cultural competence to engage and support individuals from varied backgrounds and experiences.

Adaptability and Ethical Judgement:

  • Resilience and stability, especially in challenging situations or environments;
  • Ability to adjust strategies based on healthcare or organizational changes;
  • Strong ethical foundation to guide decisions and actions in line with professional standards; and
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
