Upward Bound Summer Instructors

Virginia Tech’s Upward Bound Programs is seeking instructors to teach non-credit courses to high school students during the summer program sessions (June 8-27 and July 6-25) in the following (but not limited to) subject areas:

Language Arts, Science, Math (high school level), Foreign Languages, Engineering, Sociology, Psychology, Criminology, Debate, Financial Literacy, Expressive Arts, Entrepreneurship

Instructors may be hired for one or both components. Summer Component classes are offered Monday/ Wednesday or Tuesday/ Thursday, with Fridays being trip days for student participants. Students participate in coursework for the first two weeks of each session in June and July, and take a trip during the third week. Instructors will be expected to teach in-person at Virginia Tech from June 9th – June 19th (4 class sessions for each  course) and/ or July 7th – July 17th (4 class sessions for each course). Summer Component program gives students and instructors a break from June 29th – July 5th. This schedule is subject to change based on availability of funds and programmatic needs. Weekly instructor meetings are scheduled every Monday at noon (lunch provided) during instructional weeks: June 9 and 16 and July 7 and 14.  

The Upward Bound Programs are dedicated to encouraging and preparing approximately 220 income-eligible and potential first-generation students from high schools throughout southwestern Virginia to pursue a college education. Upward Bound Summer Course Instructors will be responsible for creating an engaging project-based learning module which teaches subject area material and integrates research-based skills. Students enrolled in the summer program will be the first in their families to earn a four-year degree, meet income-eligibility guidelines, and/or meet the federal definition for high-risk of academic failure. Upward Bound is designed to help students overcome academic, social, and cultural barriers to post-secondary education, and the summer program is focused on helping students develop the skills necessary for success in both secondary and post-secondary education. 

The Summer Course Instructor will: 
Develop, plan, prepare, and deliver project-based course curriculum in line with Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL’s), where applicable.
Utilize differentiated lesson plans for students with diverse learning abilities and grade levels.
Submit a syllabus to the TRIO Programs office prior to the start of the summer program.  
Submit classroom supplies request to the TRIO Programs office a minimum of two weeks prior to the start of the summer program.  
Integrate competencies, goals, and objectives into lesson plans that develop critical thinking skills and higher self-efficacy.  
Create a positive educational climate for students.  
Score and provide regular feedback on projects, or use other forms of assessment, to observe and evaluate each student’s performance.
Submit copies of assessment results to the TRIO Programs office within the timeframe specified by the TRIO Programs staff at the start of the summer.  
Utilize curricula that reflect the diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds of the students served.  
Work with TRIO Programs staff to ensure initiatives and objectives are being met.   
Effectively manage student behavior in the classroom; enforce approved disciplinary procedures. 
Attend pre-summer training, weekly instructor meetings, and additional functions, as required.  
Perform other administrative duties as needed.  

Instructors will earn a minimum of $1,275 per June or July only course, and $2,550 for courses taught through June and July. The number of courses will be determined by program needs, available funding, and student enrollment in the program. 
Successful candidates must have a valid conviction check and complete Title IX/Minors on campus training, prior to employment.

A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in content area or a closely related field.

Proven ability to develop working relationships with persons of culturally diverse backgrounds; disadvantaged and underrepresented students.

Experience working for educational programs that address the needs of low-income, first-generation disadvantaged youth.

 

A master's degree in instructional subject area, or closely related field.
Experience working with an Upward Bound program or any of the U.S. Department of Education TRIO programs.
One year of teaching experience.
