Job Description:
The Old Dominion University F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, non-tenure track Lecturer position in Music Theory and Aural Skills. The Diehn School of Music is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute through their teaching, research, and service to the diversity and excellence of our academic and musical community. We encourage applications from candidates who will bring a fresh perspective to our existing courses and whose expertise encompasses a broad range of repertoires and methodologies.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
  1. Serve as Area Coordinator of the Music Theory and Aural Skills area.
  2. Teach courses in a recently redesigned three-semester core curriculum that includes music theory and aural skills.
  3. Teach upper-division seminars assigned according to faculty interests.
  4. Perform service activities, which may include assignments on curricular, faculty governance, college/university, and other internal committees, advising a diverse population of students, participating fully in divisional meetings, administering departmental placement examinations, contributing to curricular innovations, and developing a visible presence as an educator on behalf of the F. Ludwig Diehn School of Music.
Minimum Qualifications:

Candidates must have evidence of experience in teaching music theory and aural skills/ear training at the undergraduate and/or graduate level as well as evidence of ongoing engagement in creative activity and/or research relevant to music theory and aural skills.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • A demonstrated potential for successful undergraduate teaching.
  • Evidence of ongoing scholarly productivity in the field of music theory.
  • Keyboard competence.
  • Accomplished musicianship.
  • A successful record of university-level teaching experience.
  • Evidence of professional qualifications to coordinate and lead curricular development and innovation in a collegiate music theory and aural skills sequence.
  • Evidence of ongoing engagement in artistic, academic, and/or research projects in the field of music.
