The Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education (CISE) at the UVA School of Education and Human Development seeks applicants for an experienced teacher educator to serve as an Academic Program Officer within the CISE Department. CISE offers a range of educator preparation programs in teacher education, reading education, and special education.

The CISE Department supports McGuffey Reading Services, the oldest, continuously running university-based reading service in the country. Duties of the Academic Program Officer will include the administrative management of McGuffey Reading Services, including after school interventions, diagnostic evaluations, and communication with internal and external stakeholders.

We are seeking a candidate who is enthusiastic about helping to shape the department’s culture and practices and who can adapt through a process of continuous improvement to meet stakeholders' needs. The person in this position must have excellent communication skills to be effective in building relationships with faculty, academic departments, and partners across the school and in the local community.

Responsibilities for McGuffey Reading Services

  • Arrange literacy-based field experiences for the teacher education program
  • Maintain Canvas sites and McGuffey webpages

Responsibilities will also include the day-to-day operations of the Master of Education in Special Education degree. This program is designed to support special educators in deepening their skills, broadening their knowledge base, and pursuing new roles within special education. Areas of focus include special education leadership and applied behavioral analysis. Many M.Ed. students are working professionals, so some evening hours will be required to provide student support.

Responsibilities for the M.Ed. in Special Education
  • Serve as a point of contact to students and faculty on matters related to course enrollment, program requirements, policies and procedures, and other administrative matters.
  • Monitor students’ academic progress with faculty advisors. Coordinate with Student Affairs to help students access university resources as appropriate. Collaborate with faculty and staff to support students facing heightened personal challenges.
  • Develop synchronous programming and asynchronous materials for orientations, advising, and community events. Maintain program Canvas sites.
  • Collaborate on projects related to advising, academic support, and continuous program improvement as determined by the Director of Teacher Education and the Special Education Program Coordinator.
