    Job Description

The Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanics (BEAM) at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in biomechanics at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. The successful applicant will have expertise and scholarly interests in injury biomechanics in areas such as autosafety, athletics, and/or military injury mechanisms that align with activities at the Center for Injury Biomechanics (CIB). We are seeking candidates motivated to contribute to a collegial, interdisciplinary community that has a strong tradition of both fundamental and applied research, and high quality teaching and mentoring.

BEAM is an interdisciplinary department with faculty interests spanning engineering, science, mathematics, and medicine. Offering BS, MS, and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering, the department currently has 30 full-time faculty members, and is home to approximately 150 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. BEAM’s graduate BME program is currently ranked 36 out of 149 programs nationally by USNews & World Report. This ranking has been rising rapidly in recent years, a testament to recruitment of outstanding faculty and financial commitments by the University at several levels. The department combines and leverages the strengths of Virginia Tech's College of Engineering, the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute to produce an environment that fosters outstanding interdisciplinary research and education. Further information about BEAM, partner programs, and Blacksburg can also be found at the BEAM homepage (www.beam.vt.edu).

The CIB is an interdisciplinary research center that is a partnership between the Virginia Tech College of Engineering and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Research in the CIB spans a broad range of both computational and experimental biomechanics approaches to investigate injury mechanisms, understand human tolerance for injury, and engineer preventative safety strategies and devices. The spectrum of ongoing research is broad and includes automobile safety, military safety, and sports biomechanics. The facilities and resources at the CIB are expansive and state-of-the-art, including tissue storage and handling, fully equipped testing, machine shop, and 3-D printing facilities as well as a crash sled lab, shock tube lab, helmet lab, and additional labs at Wake Forest.
