Longwood University invites applications for the position of Assistant Coach, Baseball (M0050). The Assistant Coach, Baseball will be responsible for managing and overseeing the recruitment of prospective student-athletes, ensuring that the team attracts and identifies top talent while adhering to NCAA rules and regulations. This position requires a strong understanding of both the athletic and academic demands of Division 1 baseball, and the ability to build relationships with recruits, high school and junior college coaches, and others in the recruiting landscape.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties :

Recruitment Strategy & Management:
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive recruiting strategy to identify and attract prospective student athletes.
  • Build and maintain relationships with high school, junior college, and travel baseball coaches, scouts, and other key stakeholders.
  • Manage all aspects of recruiting, including identification, evaluation, and outreach to prospective recruits (via phone calls, emails, social media, etc.).
  • Coordinate and organize recruiting visits, including official and unofficial visits, ensuring a smooth and positive experience for recruits and their families.
  • Analyze prospective recruits' athletic performance, academic standing, and overall fit within the program's culture and needs.
  • Work closely with coaching staff to assess needs for each recruiting class and fill roster gaps.

Compliance & NCAA Regulations:
  • Ensure all recruiting efforts comply with NCAA Division I recruiting rules and regulations, including contact periods, evaluations, and recruitment-related communications.
  • Maintain records of recruiting efforts, visits, and correspondence in accordance with NCAA rules.
  • Assist in the completion of required NCAA compliance paperwork related to recruitment.

Recruiting Communication & Outreach:
  • Coordinate the communication flow with recruits, their families, and coaches (email, phone, social media, etc.).
  • Create and distribute recruiting materials, including brochures, highlight reels, and online content to attract top talent.
  • Represent the program at recruiting events, showcases, and tournaments to identify and evaluate potential recruits.
  • Host and conduct recruitment meetings for prospects, explaining program expectations, team goals, and the benefits of playing at Longwood University.

Administrative Duties:
  • Manage and track recruitment databases, lists, and spreadsheets, ensuring that all recruit information is up-to-date and accessible.
  • Coordinate and attend scouting events, showcase tournaments, and other recruitment-related activities as required.
  • Work with the academic support staff to monitor the academic eligibility of recruits.
  • Assist the coaching staff with administrative tasks such as travel, recruitment schedules, and event planning.

Collaboration:
  • Collaborate with the head coach, assistant coaches, and athletic administration to ensure alignment with the program's vision and goals.
  • Maintain consistent communication with recruits to keep them engaged throughout the recruiting process.

Additional Duties:
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach or athletic administration.


Job Requirements:

Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree required (preferably in sports management, communications, or a related field).
  • Previous experience in college baseball recruitment, coaching, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of NCAA Division I baseball rules and regulations.
  • Experience using recruitment databases or recruitment management software is a plus.

Skills & Abilities:
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to evaluate talent and assess player potential based on athletic, academic, and personal qualities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and recruiting software/tools.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and how to utilize them for recruiting purposes.

Work Environment:
  • Travel is required for recruiting events, tournaments, and showcases.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required, especially during peak recruitment periods.
  • Must be able to interact professionally with student-athletes, parents, coaches, and other university staff.


Additional Information:

This is a part-time, miscellaneous, exempt position limited to an average of 29 hours per week and 1,500 hours maximum per work year. Commonwealth of Virginia benefits do not accompany this position.
