Longwood University invites qualified applicants to apply for the position of Assistant Director for Residential and Commuter Life (GA006) in the department of Residential and Commuter Life. The successful candidate will be responsible for addressing individual student concerns and urgent situations, taking direction from the Senior Director of Residential and Commuter Life. This role involves direct supervision of two Residence Education Coordinators/Graduate Community Coordinators and indirect supervision of the Residence Life communities overseen by the assigned REC/GCCs. The candidate will also oversee the selection of student staff and manage commuter programming, resources, and the Commuter Lounge. Additionally, the selected candidate will provide follow-up support for residential and commuting students involved in behavioral and personal crises. This role also includes oversight of the residential and commuter life programming model, its implementation, and data analysis. Moreover, this position participates in the professional staff on-call duty rotation to respond to individual and campus emergencies as they arise.

This position is located in Farmville, Virginia, and is required to work in person on Longwood University's campus.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Directly supervise two Residence Education Coordinators and/or Graduate Community Coordinators, indirectly supervising corresponding student staff.
  • Respond to and provide follow-up for individual student concerns and urgent situations.
  • Oversee the Residential and Commuter Life Programming Model.
  • Oversee the student staff selection and student/professional staff manuals.
  • Manage monthly administrative audits for the department.
  • Manage the monthly office supply/front desk supply orders for the department.
  • Oversee the Commuter Lounge, supervising student staff and commuter programming and resource efforts.
  • Serve as a member of the Dean of Students Unit; attend staff meetings, individual supervision meetings with DOS.
  • Contribute as a part of a team to support campus-wide programs/events sponsored by the DOS Unit.
  • Participate in and contribute to University, Student Affairs, and Dean of Students committees, meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Serve on associated internal/external committees and working groups as a representative of Longwood.
  • Participate in appropriate professional development opportunities and professional organizations.
  • Perform duties and responsibilities in a manner that is consistent with the laws, regulations, and policies of the Commonwealth of Virginia, Longwood University, and the American College Personnel Association Ethical Principles and Standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of RCL, Dean of Students and/or the VP for Student Affairs.
  • Be available for some evening and weekend hours, which are necessary to satisfy position responsibilities and/or needs of the University.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Serve as professional staff on-call, coordinating response during serious emergency issues, and contacting parents/guardians and other campus officials as appropriate.
  • Serve as an Administrative Hearing and Agreed Resolution Officer and Hearing Advisor.
  • Serve as a Title IX Investigator.


Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field in addition to housing and residence life experience.
  • Master's degree in a related field and 2-3 years of residence life/student housing experience at the graduate or post-graduate level preferred.
  • Two or more years working in crisis management and serving as an on-duty administrator with preferred experience as a supervisor of professionals in an on-call role.
  • Experience with student staff recruitment, selection, and training.
  • Experience with referring and/or adjudicating student conduct cases.
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office products required and aptitude for learning other software is important.
  • Excellent customer service, communication, and teamwork skills are required, as well as outstanding written and verbal communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.
  • Required to reside in Longwood-managed housing.
  • The ability to act independently, take initiative, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusivity, as well as the ability to work with a wide range of constituencies (students, staff, faculty, parents/guardians, and administrators) with diplomacy and tact.
  • Must be a current Longwood employee.


Additional Information:

This is a full-time, administrative and professional, exempt position available exclusively to current Longwood employees. A successful fingerprint based criminal background investigation is required. AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
