Job Description:
Reynolds is one of the largest community colleges in Virginia and serves Virginia’s capital city and five nearby counties. Annually, our four campus sites serve approximately 13,000 credit students and provide training for 7,400 students through the Community College Workforce Alliance. Reynolds Community College is seeking a dynamic and student-focused professional to serve as the Assistant Director of Academic Advising & Transfer Services. This role provides day-to-day leadership and operational oversight of advising services across all campus locations, ensuring students receive consistent, high-quality academic and transfer advising.
The Assistant Director manages a team of advising professionals, fosters a high-performing and student-centered culture, and implements innovative practices to support student equity, retention, and success. This position also strengthens cross-functional partnerships between Advising Services and academic departments, particularly through the faculty advising model.

The role includes, but is not limited to, the following duties:

  • Provide supervision, coaching, and professional development for academic advising and transfer services staff
  • Ensure consistent, equitable advising coverage across campuses
  • Implement technology and data-informed strategies to improve advising efficiency and student outcomes
  • Facilitate collaboration with academic departments to align advising services with program requirements and institutional goals
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts within Advising Services through regular evaluation of advising outcomes, student feedback, and staff performance
  • Coordinate training to keep advising staff current on best practices, institutional policies, and student needs
  • Monitor key performance indicators such as student retention, satisfaction, credit accumulation, and graduation rates
Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
  • Comprehensive knowledge of academic programs, curricular pathways, enrollment services, and career development within a higher education setting
  • Ability to apply student development theories to support the academic, personal, and professional growth of a diverse student population
  • Proficiency in interpreting and communicating institutional policies, procedures, and academic requirements to ensure students receive accurate and timely advising
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with the ability to foster positive relationships across departments and with students
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, and support a high-performing advising team; prior supervisory experience is preferred
  • Effective use of student information systems and advising technologies to manage, track, and analyze student data and outcomes
  • Cultural competency with a demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive advising environment for individuals of diverse backgrounds
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and staying current on advising best practices, trends in higher education, and institutional initiatives
Additional Considerations:

Education and Experience:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with coursework in counseling, student affairs, higher education, or a related field.
  • Progressive experience working in an advisory or counseling capacity with individuals from diverse backgrounds is essential.
  • Experience working in a college or university setting, particularly in academic advising, student support services, or enrollment management.
