Job Duties

The Virginia Military Institute Office of Career Services (OCS) is accepting applications for the Assistant Director of Career Services. Reporting to the Director of Career Services, the Assistant Director performs the following responsibilities:

• Provides career-related assessment and advising for cadets, demonstrating current knowledge of career development theory, assessment instruments, resources, and strategies to promote effective career decision-making processes.
• Overseas the efforts to collect First Destination Survey with the support from the Office Manager.
• Instructs LS 350/351 (Leadership and Career Development) courses.
• Promotes use of OCS technology resources, including online career resources among cadets, faculty, and alumni.
• Provides support in the development of OCS website content that is more sophisticated and interactive.
• Hires, trains, and supervises OCS career ambassadors.
• Conducts outreach initiatives to cadets, especially sophomore cadets, to encourage their early engagement with the OCS.
• Partners with the Assistant Director of Experiential Learning and Employer Relations to manage OCS presence on LinkedIn, Facebook & Instagram and educates cadets on building an effective online presence.
• Supports the development of expanded resources and workshops on professional skills such as business and dining etiquette, professional networking, online presence, business communications and protocols.
• Engages in cross training efforts related to office technology and administrative functions to support the mission of the OCS programs.
• Continually refines and develops knowledge of issues and trends in career services and student development.
• Actively engages with VACE, conducts benchmarking activities with other institutions to identify best practices which might be used to expand and improve the OCS portfolio of services.
• Engages in ongoing professional development that will include an annual individualized plan for increasing skills, knowledge and professional proficiencies.
• Serves as team member or leader for projects and task forces in support of the OCS mission.
• Participates in some evening and weekend events as scheduled in advance.
• Represents the OCS at events and performs other duties as assigned to support the mission of the OCS.

Minimum Qualifications

• At least a Bachelor’s degree
• Three years of professional experience either in an educational setting or industry- specific position(s).
• The ability to counsel/teach students the skills and abilities needed for a successful job search.
• Expertise with computer and web-based applications is necessary with desired experience using MS Office Professional software and web site software.
• Candidates should possess knowledge of career development theory, career services and graduate education resources and technology applications.
• Expertise with career counseling and career planning assessments preferred.
• Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are required, along with a demonstrated ability to develop effective collaborative relationships with internal and external constituencies.
• Knowledge of and experience in program assessment/evaluation and learning outcomes
are preferred.
• Demonstrated skills with web tools and technologies supporting career services are preferred.
• Also preferred are a collaborative and team-oriented work style, demonstrated flexibility and adaptability, as well as the ability to effectively multi-task in a fast-paced dynamic environment.

Additional Considerations

Master’s degree in a related disciplinary field.
• Recruiting and marketing experience.

• Demonstrated skills with web tools and technologies supporting career services.
