    About the Department:

    The primary purpose/objective/mission of the Division of Public Safety is to support the mission of the University Police Department by providing a safe and secure environment for all university employees, students, and visitors as they pursue their daily work and study activities, consistent with the laws of the Commonwealth and the policies of the University. The Department will work collaboratively with academic and administrative units, individuals, and organizations in furtherance of the mission of the University.

    About the Position:

    The primary purpose of the Senior Locksmith is to develop, maintain, and install door lock hardware systems, both electronic and physical for the university community, incorporating OMNI, master, and grand master key systems for all George Mason University properties. Works with electronic access control technicians as required.

    Responsibilities:

    Installs, Repairs, and Maintains Mechanical Locks:

    • Performs general locksmith duties in a timely and efficient manner to include safe repair and combo changes, emergencies lock outs, master-keying, re-keying, installation, and repair of all types of locks including mortise lock, rim cylinders, pad locks, file cabinets locks, duplication, etc.;
    • Responsible for maintaining over 2,000 stand-alone access control systems, including OMNI lock systems and the V Series keypad;
    • Programs, maintains, and keeps an updated audit on all of these units; and
    • Assists with generating and installing master key systems in new construction and renovations.

    Maintains and Provides Upkeep of Equipment Inventory and Work Order Records;

    • Assists in the coordination of all work orders for lock repairs and access reader repairs;
    • Audits inventory and orders supplies for lock shop when required;
    • Manages and addresses work order assignments in a timely and efficient manner;
    • Ensures invoices and charge-backs are correctly processed and reconciled;
    • Accepts written and verbal reports regarding access control issues identified on George Mason University properties and campuses;
    • Produces written reports, emails, and statements when requested;
    • Completes assigned work tickets with adequate detail; and
    • Keeps supervisors informed of access control issues affecting customers.

    Provides Customer Service and Assistance to Staff and Customers in Troubleshooting Lock and Key Systems:

    • Conducts all work in a timely manner in accordance with established George Mason University lock shop standards and policies with a focus on accuracy, customer service, and maintaining security;
    • Reviews and maintains a working knowledge of all department policies and university policies pertaining to all relevant key and lock installation best practices and policies;
    • Coordinates and communicates with university departments and contractors, as a representative of the George Mason University Physical Security unit to work with scheduling installation for access control systems;
    • Meets with and provides assistance to staff and faculty in the type of lock necessary to provide the best security and safety for their areas; and
    • Provides guidance and assistance for vendors or contractors.

    Assists with Maintaining Electronic Access and Key Control Systems:

    • Provides assistance and support to Access Control and Key Control units when requested;
    • Maintains basic knowledge and is familiar with electronic access control systems for both networked and stand-alone locks; and
    • Periodically provides assistance with key cutting duties in conjunction with Senior Key Control Specialist or designee.

    Performs Other Related Duties as Assigned:

    • Practices personal accountability and follows code of conduct, laws, policies, and procedures, and is in compliance with training and certification required of position;
    • Reviews, follows, and maintains a working knowledge of all laws, state, university, and department policies;
    • Complies with policies safeguarding confidential/sensitive information;
    • Follows the department’s professional standards and code of conduct;
    • Follows assigned work schedule and requests, enrolls in, and attends training when required; and
    • Reports to work during emergencies/call-back as an essential/designated employee.

    Required Qualifications:

    • High school diploma or equivalent;
    • Generally, 1-2 years of related experience;
    • Knowledge of technical door and locksmith trades;
    • Knowledge of locksmith practices and terminology;
    • Knowledge of master keying and master key systems;
    • Possess locksmith skills consisting of key cutting ability;
    • Computer skills to include technical skills of current applications and databases;
    • Excellent interpersonal, problem solving, and verbal/written communication skills;
    • Excellent public relations/customer service skills;
    • Demonstrated ability to install, repair, and rekey locks;
    • Ability to pass a rigid background check to include a polygraph;
    • Ability to communicate respectfully to internal and external customers, appreciate diversity and respect differences, and maintain confidentiality;
    • Ability to work with teams or independently with minimal supervision at times;
    • Ability to work independently and solve problems involving many variables;
    • Other attributes include having a dependable work ethic, and a high level of integrity, honesty, and accountability;
    • Must be willing to serve in an on-call capacity when required;
    • Possess a bonded locksmith and safe lock servicing certification, Foley Belsaw certification, advanced locksmith certification, best certified in keystone 600 master keying product, ASSA ABLOY, BEST, Von Duprin, Schlage, Sargent, and/or DCJS Locksmith certification, or be able to obtain such certifications; and
    • Must currently possess an appropriate, active, valid motor vehicle operator’s license that meets all of GMU’s requirements for operating state vehicles and equipment under Mason’s Vehicle Use Policy 1411 https://universitypolicy.gmu.edu/policies/vehicle-use/. The Office of Risk Management reserves the right to review the driver’s licenses and Motor Vehicle Reports (MVRs) of all candidates selected with employment contingent upon a favorable review.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Vocational or technical training in related field; and
    • Generally, 2+ years of related experience.
