About the Job:
Reporting directly to the Assistant Principal, the Biology Teacher will provide quality educational programs through sound instruction to meet the individual needs of residents/students, as well as the standards defined under the Commonwealth’s statutes and program certification requirements.

As a condition of employment, the selected individual(s) must successfully complete the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice's Basic Skills and Handle with Care training located in Hanover, County and have the ability to obtain certifications in First-Aid and CPR.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment to successfully perform the work

Ability to supervise students and youth, facilitate appropriate classroom management, and maintain accurate records

Knowledge of DHRM policies and procedures and the ability to meet DHRM established physical demands

Regular and predictable attendance is required

Additional Considerations

Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and graduated from an approved teacher preparation program in biology; or earned a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university and completed a major in biology or 32 semester hours in biology and at least one course in each of the following areas: genetics, biochemistry/molecular biology, cell biology, botany, zoology, anatomy/physiology, ecology, and evolutionary biology and other preparation consistent with the competencies for the endorsement; or earned an endorsement in another science discipline and completed at least 18 semester hours in biology, including at least one course in each of the following areas: genetics, biochemistry/molecular biology or cell biology, botany, zoology, anatomy/physiology, and evolutionary biology or ecology

Experience as a science teacher in a secondary setting

Experience teaching at-risk youth preferred

Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching Certificate/License with an endorsement(s) in biology

Must successfully complete Department of Juvenile Justice's mandated training and certifications
